Texas vs. Kansas State No. 4 Texas (9-1) at Kansas St (6-4), 8:00 pm EST MANHATTAN, Kansas (Ticker) - Fourth-ranked Texas looks to secure a spot in the Big 12 Conference championship game for a second straight year when it visits Kansas State on Saturday. Last year, the Longhorns - led by superstar junior Vince Young - reached their first conference title game since 2001, then manhandled Colorado, 70-3, before edging Southern California in the Rose Bowl to win their first national championship since 1970. This year, Texas is led by a redshirt freshman, Colt McCoy, who plays with a poise beyond his experience. Last weekend, McCoy completed 23-of-29 passes for a season-high 346 yards and three touchdowns as the Longhorns (9-1, 6-0 Big 12 South) routed Oklahoma State, 36-10, to move within a win of a repeat division title. McCoy's three TD passes gave him 27 for the season, breaking a school record shared by Young and Chris Simms. He needs three more to break the Division I-A freshman record set by Nevada's David Neill in 1998. Texas also tied its school record of 21 straight league wins, set from 1968-71 in the Southwest Conference. Kansas State has gone 6-4 - 3-3 in the Big 12 North - in its first year under Ron Prince to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2003. The Wildcats are coming off a 34-21 triumph at lowly Colorado, their second straight win after consecutive defeats. Freshman Josh Freeman completed 22-of-26 passes for 251 yards and two TDs in the victory. Texas has won the past two meetings since a 35-17 home loss in 1999. The teams have not played the last two years. GO K-State!
Maybe I'm just thinking of the K-State of old, but I think it will be a good game. I know Nebraska has a reputation for awesome fans, but I never experienced that first hand. I can say that of all the fans I have met, I think K-State has the best by far.
I haven't met many Kansas State fans, but I've never met a bad Nebraska fan. After the 1998 season, I was driving from Austin to Albuquerque for the Christmas holidays. I attended the UT football banquet the night before and they had handed out posters of various games. I had one of the game where we went into Nebraska and beat the Huskers, snapping their long home winning streak. I stopped in Tucumcari, NM, to grab a bite to eat and noticed that the people piling into the van next to me had a big Nebraska wheel cover on the back of the van. Wanting to talk a little smack, I threw my food in the car, grabbed the poster from the back and pulled it out for them, all with a ****-eating grin on my face. To the dismay of an immature 22 year-old, their response was "oh, that was such a fantastic game. We were so happy that Ricky Williams won the Heisman". That was added to the fact that the Horns received a standing ovation from their fans after that game.
Good story. When my wife and I were in LA sports bars rooting for UT and Tech, the K-State fans would have a huge contingent, folks from their 20's to 70's and would invite us fellow Big 12 fans to join them. I went to a K-State games a fews years ago in Austin. We won, a few drunk frat boys started bothering some K-State fans as we were all filing out. They looked stunned from the inhospitality. How embarassing for the rest of us (I physically placed myself between them and told the K-State fans 'good game', they told me that they hoped we win out... classy).
Under ordinary circumstances, Texas should win big. However, there is an arctic cold front that will play havoc with the Texas passing game. McCoy + Texas = McCold + Kansas. Go, Colt, go! Give us four TD passes!...or five.
KState fans and Nebraska fans are great...maybe the best. three years ago, when KState played at Austin, i attended one of the best games i've seen live. the visitors corner (the NW of the stadium) was easily as loud as the entire Longhorn contingent. when VY snuck it in for the go-ahead score in the north endzone on fourth down, the sound was deafening. amazing game. amazing fans. Texas wins big today, guys. this is not the KState of old...
I had some customers in Nebraska and the one thing I can say about them is they are great FOOTBALL fans. They are fans of great college football first and Nebraska football second. I guess you can be like that when you were as consistently good as the were the last 30 years.
Bwahahahahah!!!! One more domino is falling as Georgia is giving Auburn as 24-7 shalacking in the 2nd qtr. Go Bulldogs!!! Go Gamecocks!!! Go Wildcats!!! Go Ducks!!! Go Vols!!!!!
Louisville out. Auburn out. Cal out. Florida should have been out, whatever. Come on Oregon & Tennessee, help our Horns out!
Texas wins 31-17 Colt McCoy sets the NCAA record for tds by a freshman qb with 3 touchdowns. With Cal and Auburn losing and Florida having a close call against the ol' ball coach at the swamp Texas is the best 1 loss team in the nation bar none b****es.
2 more dominos down. Don't worry about Florida guys, Florida St. is gonna rock their a$$es. Take care of buisness Ducks and Vols. PS Longhorns will put on a serious display in about an 1hr.
