Texas will play Iowa in Alamo Bowl

Nearly a year after winning the national championship, the Texas Longhorns will only need to make a 90-minute drive to their bowl destination.
The Longhorns will make their first appearance in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio on Dec. 30, a bowl official told the Houston Chronicle. Texas (9-3) will play Iowa (6-6).

Bowl pairings will officially be announced later today.

It marks the first time the two schools have met since the Hawkeyes won 55-17 in the 1984 Freedom Bowl.

Less than a month ago, the Longhorns were in position for a third straight Bowl Championship Series appearance. Those hopes disappeared when consecutive losses to Kansas State and Texas A&M to end the regular-season cost the Longhorns a chance to play for the Big 12 title and the league’s automatic BCS bid.

Texas was also considered for the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., which elected to take West Virginia, the official said. The Gator Bowl’s decision to pick West Virginia was influenced by its commitment to financially underwrite Saturday’s Atlantic Coast Conference championship between Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.

West Virginia has played in the game twice in the last three seasons ands traditionally has produced strong ticket sales.

The bowl appearance will be the ninth in a row for the Longhorns, a new school record.

Ouch. How the mighty has fallen. Hope the team doesn't lose focus. Losing to Iowa would be unacceptable.

Not a chance. I'm a die hard Hawkeye fan. Texas will crush us. Tate is predictable.

Ooh, wonder if there will be a James Gandolfini sighting at the Galleria?

I thnk this is actually pretty good for the inagural Texas Bowl. Rutgers is really hawt right now, maybe because it is the closest college to NYC to ever get ranked in football in the modern era.

UT in the Alamo? A good recruiting trip for San Antonio juniors I guess. A lot more talent comes out of the SA area than most of us think about. And the Alumni don't have to waste a lot of travel money on a dud second tier game.

so are we. we give up lots of passing yards. maybe only reggie ball would struggle against us.

kinda sucks that the 2nd best big 12 team has to go to the 4th best big 12 bowl, but whatever. i guess it makes it more likely that we win as opposed to whichever sec team is in the cotton bowl or playing cal in the holiday, though they barely beat stanford.

I'll be rooting for the Scarlet Knights in the Texas Bowl for sure. I'm already being asked to DJ some Rutgers parties for that week. Be prepared for all the rowdy NJ Guidos! Fuggedabout it!

The Texas Bowl to have Rutgers is bad ass...A good way to showcase Rice...

Texas in the Alamo Bowl is kinda wierd...I still don't get why Texas can't play someone with a better record, etc..

Well we are 4th on the chart so Texas is locked into an awful bowl. Any conference's 4th bowl will be bad. Oklahoma gets the BCS, Nebraska gets the Cotton Bowl, A&M gets the Holiday Bowl, and finally Texas gets to go to the Alamo Bowl.

Also, the Gator Bowl changed its policy and opened itself up to the Big 12 (previously it was always an ACC v. Big East game) but they picked West Virginia because WVU fans generally show up in bigger numbers. It was a money game and Texas lost.

We lost to A&M. Now that Snead has officially transferred, we gonna have to play Colt, who I don't think will be 100%.

TCU...really think he should give UofH big consideration. The kid has an incredible arm that would fit Brile's system perfectly.

Is it official? I thought he was looking and TCU was the leader.

Regardless, I'm pissed that we beat Nebraka and BLoW U but they get a better bowl. If it wasn't for the hilarity of the Texans and the Greatness of VY I would be coughing up bile.

ROFL. Why are you running your mouth? Like you're in any position to talk smack this year, seeing as the Aggies are going to the Holiday Bowl (a UT staple prior to 2005). Did I mention that this will only be the Aggies' SECOND bowl game in FIVE years?

Congratulations to the Longhorns on going Alamoing. It's a perfect bowl for UT as it celebrates one of our great state's most memorable losses -- the battle of the Alamo. What better way to memorialize UT's loss to Texas A&M?

Defending NCAA champ Texas waits for Iowa in Alamo Bowl
    ANDREW LOGUE
    REGISTER STAFF WRITER

    December 3, 2006

Iowa will play defending national champion Texas in the Alamo Bowl.

Alamo Bowl officials announced that the Longhorns will be Iowa’s opponent in the Dec. 30 game.

Texas (9-3) fell to the Alamo after the Gator Bowl’s online site indicated West Virginia had been selected for that game.

“As defending national champs, we didn’t finish the way we wanted to,” Texas coach Mack Brown said this afternoon, “but playing a storied program like Iowa under Kirk Ferentz . . . it should be a great matchup.”

Texas has never participated in the Alamo Bowl – held less than a 90-minute drive away from its campus in Austin — and made its last appearance in the Alamodome in 1999 for the Big 12 Championship.

“It’ll be fun to get back and be in front of a lot of Longhorns fans,” said Brown, a one-time assistant coach at Iowa State from 1979-81. “And I was at Iowa State, so I know how those Iowa fans support their team.”

Iowa (6-6) has played Texas only once: The Hawkeyes won 55-17 in the 1984 Freedom Bowl.

“I also know they have a number of young men from the state of Texas —none better than Drew Tate, who’s just had an unbelievable career there,” Brown said.

The Longhorns are the latest in a series of tradition-rich postseason opponents for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes lost to Southern California (38-17) at the 2003 Orange Bowl and beat Louisiana State (30-25) at the 2005 Capital One Bowl. Iowa split two meetings with Florida in the 2004 and ’06 Outback Bowls.

Brown was asked today about former Texas co-defensive coordinator Gene Chizik, who recently was named coach at Iowa State.

Chizik has said he will not coach in the Longhorns’ bowl game as he transitions into his new job.

“Any time you have an assistant coach who has a chance to be a head coach, you’re really excited for them,” Brown said. “When this opportunity came up for Gene and his family, obviously we had discussions about Ames and Iowa State and what it was like to live there, what the people in Ames are like — and I had nothing but good things to say about them.”

Brown said Chizik is ready to dive into his new position in the Big 12 Conference, where the Cyclones will face his former team.

“I know Gene’s really excited about the opportunity,” Brown said. “I told him I hope he goes 11-1.”
