It's going down Saturday at 6PM. The last team to win in Lincoln was.....TEXAS in '98, my freshman year. It looks like I'm the only one here who's brave enough to traverse the MidWest frontier and make the drive up there. Me and my roommate are leaving tomorrow morning at 6AM to pick up a rental car. I didn't think my Ranger 4x4 was comfy enough for the trip. I'm gonna beat the hell outta the Ford Taurus rental. Heard the weather has a high 40, low 22 on Friday and Sat. This will be a rowdy, drunken weekend. Anyways, as always, the key to stopping NU is containing the option. DJ or Redding will probably block an option pitch or two. They don't pass much, but we still need to watch out for the big play. On the other side, Nebraska will send everyone at Cedric, and leave their DBs with man coverage on our guys. On offense, Simms needs to test the weak Husker secondary. Cedric will have a difficult time running on the D-line, but GD cannot abandon the run. Look for Selvin Young to get some carries, too. Ivan Williams will start at FB. Chad Stevens should be healthy, and back at TE. I'll give the full report from Omaha/Lincoln, as soon as I return on Sunday. Hook Em.
man we better win. i had a ticket but the ride situation broke down (unless 4 people were willing to go like 13 hours in a 3 seat truck) and so i sold it and will watch from the comfort of my couch instead of in 30 degree weather from a crappy seat. on a sad note, i somehow forgot yesterday was my registration date (realized i forgot at 2 am) and now have to wait til saturday to register. two classes already closed. and i had a prime senior registration time, dammit. hopefully add/drop works out. and go UT. only two teams win in lincoln.
Well, brave would be one way to put it. DUMB would be another! Just kidding...props to you for making it up there. Go Horns...or something. (I think we will win...not gonna get too rowdy though...the OU loss pretty much took the wind out of my sails)
I was watching the CSU AF game earlier tonight. Temps were in the 10's. I felt the room get colder...brrrr...can't wait for Sat nite in Lincoln from my couch.
as of this morning they are calling for 38 degrees at kickoff with the temps dropping quickly. For the last week it`s been around 20 degrees with a wind chill of 12 at 7:30 pm each night. The good news is that we are finally going to the sun............bundle up and enjoy. Not sure if you have ever been to Memorial Stadium but you will have a blast, the whole town closes down and it`s one big tailgaiting party. Have fun and good luck to your Longhorns
Have fun, Baqui. I'm still predicting a relatively easy win. I don't think you can run the option effectively against a team with players as athletic as UT's. But I also think the Texas offense is pretty anemic. My prediction would be around 24-13, if Horne is as good as advertized. If not, 24-7. The only thing that worries me is Nebraska being able to ram it up the middle. It looked like that problem got fixed last week, but you never can tell. Wright certainly has been impressive since he started getting more playing time.
I did have a cool dream about Simms last night. Every time we got the ball, he just chunked it all the way down field for a TD on the first play. What was really cool is that he'd throw it, turn around, and throw his arm's up in celebration before the ball was anywhere close to the receiver. The score ended up being something like 77-0 with 11 Simms 60 yard TD passes. And people still b****ed about him (just saving you the time The Cat ).
24-17 Nebraska. I see a repeat of OU. We get an early lead, go conservative, start punting a lot, and Nebraska wears us down and scores late. Plus I got in trouble with one of my Nebraska-fan friends for mocking Nebraska before last week, so I have to pick NU this week.
UT held a "Roast the Huskers" rally a couple of night ago. Usually rallies are held for special occassions...OU, A&M, after humiliating losses etc. I wonder what's so special about this upcoming game.
I wonder what's so special about this upcoming game. I'm betting it was planned during the offseason when Nebraska was a top-10 type team. Either that, or its based on the "budding rivalry" between the two schools, although we've had a 2 yr hiatus on that.
Texas 27 Nebraska 23 Anyone expecting this one to be easy is going to be in for a surprise. Nebraska may not be the same as last year, but at home they are still a very, very good team. No one has beaten them there since Mack did it four years ago. We've looked vulnerable against the option, but we also had to play the pass a lot more against teams like ISU and had less men up front. I think Texas wins because the speed of our receivers is too much for the NU secondary, but it'll be close. I do have one prediction, though. If we lose, it'll be because Nebraska watches the OU tape and runs it down our throat and controls the line of scrimmage. I also predict that if that happens, people won't even discuss the defense when looking for someone to blame.
I also predict that if that happens, people won't even discuss the defense when looking for someone to blame. That depends on what the offense does. If the offense scores 40 and the defense gives up 41, the defense will get the blame. If the offense scores 7 (like vs. OU this year, not including the pointless TD at the end)), they'll probably get the blame. If the offense scores 20 but gives up 20 by turning the ball over several times, they'll probably get the blame too (CU last year).
I'm gonna beat this dead horse once more. The defense forced 4 TO's against OU and basically scored ten points. Yes, they gave up a boatload of yards against the midget, but 100+ was in the first Quarter. Give up all the yards you want, but if you hold them to 3 in the first quarter, you did your job. Besides, it may have kept our offense off the field, but were they gonna do anything anyway? Defense held OU to 11 in 3 quarters. Good enough. They collapsed in the 4th, but that could be because of fatigue and OU's coaches actually making an adjustment.
Cat: When the hell have we looked vulnerable against the option? Roberson and Wallace both run it better than Lord, and they got their asses handed to them when they tried it (yeah, I know, Wallace really isn't an option QB, but he does run it). Texas has been vulnerable to the run to an extent. But they've given up very little on plays that use any degree of horizontal running. If a team wants to gain against Texas, they've got to do it up the gut. The team's just too damned fast to try to move up the sidelines. Redding has simply destroyed people who have tried to do that. I don't get it. Iowa St. is quite a bit better than this Nebraska team. I wouldn't be surprised if K-state ends up higher ranked as well than Nebraska. Being at home gives them at advantage... but not big enough to matter.
I don't know the statistics, but from the stands, Wallace seemed pretty successful running the option. As I said, it was probably because we had to respect the pass, but ISU seemed to find some holes on the right side when they went option. Also, I really hate to bring up this argument again, but in the OU game, the great plays by our secondary covered up the miscues of our front seven, which were physically manhandled at the line of scrimmage. OU may not have pulled away until the fourth quarter, but a top ranked defense should not be pushed around at the line the way UT was against OU. Even when OU didn't score, they often had long drives that wore down our defense even more. You can blame it on the offense if you want, but the defense should've never given up as many yards as it did early, offense or no offense. It just didn't appear to be as big of a problem early, because our secondary kept making great plays to bail the front seven out.
This game will not be close. We already played a better version of Nebraska on the road in the KState anyway, and completely shut down that offense. I respect your opinion Cat, but the defense did not play horribly against the run vs OU. Except for the 1st quarter where he got 100 yards on that one play(and only 3 pts), and the 4th when we were dead tired, he racked up the rest. Griffin got nothing the majority of the game. Nebraska doesn't have the athletes to hang with us, nor the team speed. And their defense is terrible. If the aggies can lay 31 on them, even with a revamped offense, you know they aren't the usual blackshirts. I think they have pride and all, but I see 24-10 ish as the score, and a game that isn't as close as the score indicates. Btw smokey, we have had a rally for almost all our big games this yr-OU/K State/NU/and the aggies of course.
Also, I really hate to bring up this argument again, but in the OU game, the great plays by our secondary covered up the miscues of our front seven, which were physically manhandled at the line of scrimmage. In other words, the defense gave up lots of yards, but made all the big plays when they had to until the 4Q. The offense didn't make any big plays (after the 1st drive) and didn't get any yards and couldn't stay on the field. Now, why would I blame the defense?
