    I don't have a link, nor do I have the names of the people involved, as I just heard this on the news over the radio coming home last night...But it is true, and it took place in Texas, so if someone there could find a link that would be great. It was sad/interesting/ enough to warrant significant play up here in Toronto...

    The story was told to the listeners without telling them where it happened, and a phone poll was opened to see if people could guess where it happened. The defendant had just been found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison. What happened, according to same defendent, was that ( inexact quote, but I swear, very close, as exact as I can remember);

    ' There were only 2 beers left. I took one, and I told (Billy?) not to take the other one, it was my last beer. He took it anyways...so I shot him in the head.'

    And, sorry to tell you this, my Texas friends, but most callers correctly guessed Texas...

    Have any of you heard this story, or is it the kind of thing that gets big play elsewhere, but is no big deal at home?

    Thanks for the link, Pole, but I don't get your question? I can say it did get big play here...and if it got big play there I would assume you had heard of it. What are the other choices that I am missing?

    you made it sound like there were only two scenarios: either we had all heard of it, or we just don't care about such mundane happenings as murder over a last beer.

    The sentencing was fairly recent, but the actual murder took place over year ago...shortly after 9/11, so to be quite honest, this is the first I've heard about it. I would imagine that there was other news at the time that may have obscured this piece that happened in a remote town. Texas is a pretty big state, you know?

    It also seems that your news report failed to mention the mental health issues and may have ad-libed a quote that conflicts with the defendents assertation that it was an accident. I'm certainly not sticking up for the defendent. From the few paragraphs I've read, it sounds like he's guilty. And certainly it begs the question of why does our society allow mentally unstable people to possess firearms.

    Nevertheless, it just seemed like the tone of your post suggests that we either must have heard of this....or we just don't care.

    And as to your assertation that the piece got "big play" there, I'd have to disagree. From the sound of it, a DJ found a news piece that he turned into a fun little game to poke fun at Texas.

    It's all cool though.

    1) My intent was not to poke fun at Texas, irrespective of whether that was the original intent of the piece. I just thought it was a terrible story, and when I hear of things involving Texas, I usually think of you guys...and when I saw nothing on it in here, I was curious.

    2) With respect to the last question I asked, that wasn't about Texas not taking this kind of thing seriously, although I suppose many would think that, it was about the strange way in which stories get passed around...I have often heard things about one area not getting heard of in that area until it was much discussed elsewhere...That was what I was referring to.

    3) Re: Mental health issue...I affirm that nothing whatsoever was mentioned about that angle in the piece I heard. On the other hand, the quote I ( pretty accurately ) posted was seriously purported to be the exact words of the accused. I even ran what I wrote down by a couple of my roommates who had heard it, and they said it was bang on...ew...sorry, bad choice of words.

    4) Given the supposition ( apparently not legally persuasive) that the accused was mentally ill, and that that was a factor, I would have to agree that it does raise gun control issues, and I do agree that the views on those issues are seen to be held in an extreme fashion in Texas.

    That man didn't anything that anyone of us wouldn't have done. It's a real shame that he had a gun because this could have easily been solved by a severe ass beating.
