2005 National Title Ring for Sale

AUSTIN, Texas -- One man's gridiron glory is another person's chance to cash in.

Less than six months after Texas won its first undisputed football national championship in 36 years, a Longhorns championship ring is for sale on eBay, the online auction site.

And the bids are going up fast.

For a 10-karat gold ring valued at about $350, bids had reached $10,599.99 by Wednesday afternoon from a buyer trying to grab a bit of Texas glory.

The anonymous seller says the ring belonged to a former Texas player but doesn't say who. The name and jersey number on the ring are blacked out in the photographs.

Athletic department spokesman Nick Voinis said school officials don't know which player owned the ring or who is selling it. The ring is sized 10½-11.

"It's disappointing," Voinis said. "It's something you should be honored to receive. Every other player is taking pride in theirs."

NCAA rules prohibit current players from selling championship rings. But there's little to prevent former players from cashing in.

Texas bought about 200 rings for players, coaches and staff.

would it be correct to assume it's a graduate Texas player who didn't get drafted and figured this is how he'd best make money?

My money is that it's Ramonce Taylor's. He needed the money for bail.

A little disappointing, but like macalu posted, for a player who didn't get drafted (or who never played), this is an easy $10K.

Also, if they wait 5-10 years, no one is going to care nearly as much.

10 karat? He probably selling it because it turned his finger green. You figure Texas could spring for something a little bit swankier with all that money their making now...

If weed was so bad you'd think we wouldn't be able to kick your ass year in and year out.

There is actually a limit placed by the NCAA on how much they are allowed to spend on the rings.

Sam, your opinion has hereby been stricken from the record because 30 year old video gamers should not be opining on others' coolness.
