I know there's a state law requiring you to have a TX license to buy a handgun in TX but do any of you know if that applies to all guns? I'm looking to buy a new rifle to go hunting this weekend and I haven't been able to find an answer online. I moved back to Houston a few months back but haven't had the chance to get my license changed yet. Thanks in advance.
I don't know about your question, but I did recently discover that it is legal to carry a pistol in your car without having your CHL.
You dont need a CHL to buy any gun (rifle, shotgun, revolver, automatic) but you do need a TX Drivers License.
That article is confusing. It makes it seem like you need to get a CHL first and you dont. You just go and pick what you want to buy. Fill out the application, you have to get it right on the first try without crossing anything out or they may reject you, give them your license, let them do the background check, pay, and leave.
I think it is legal to carry a pistol in your car as long as there is no clip and that the clip and bullets is seperated from the gun (Gun in glove compartment and Clip & Bullets in trunk)
a CHL is only to carry a concealed weapon around in public (except for hospitals, school, federal buildings, and stores that make >51% of their money from selling alcohol (? not too sure about the %)) you dont need a CHL to purchase a gun. just a valid drivers license and you have to fill out forms for a background check. if you go to a gun store, you have to wait about 1 week for the background check to pass. if you go to a gun show, you just fill out the forms and can take the gun on the spot. it is illegal to purchase fully automatic weapons, silencers (aka flash suppressors), conversion kits for altering a rifle beyond a certain length (dont know the minimum required length of a rifle). there are ways of purchasing these items but you have to pay a nonrefundable $200 application fee. then the FBI will do an extensive background check, and then a judge will decide whether to give you the license to purchase these items (there is no guarantee). however, you can never resell/trade the items, so its really not worth the hassle. not if youre planning on purchasing guns from a manufaturer or a wholesaler to resell, you must have a FFL(?). thats a dealers license. not sure how you get one. i hope that helped.
The Brady Bill expired a while back, there is no Federal waiting period for handguns or Longarms. There is an immediate background check, but you can walk in and walk out with a gun in Texas. There are some states with state sponsored waiting periods, but not here.
