Texas win 56-7. I didn't get to watch the game, I'm wondering if any of you guys have any opinion on Colt McCoy's play today. Statistics-wise, he looked pretty solid.
I saw it, he looked good, granted the competition was sh-t, but it's hard to imagine him doing much better. He even had a long run that looked pretty good. Snead looked ok but definitely not as good as McCoy, he throws the ballharder though or so it seems. All in all, it's tough to imagine Texas wanting more out of McCoy than what he gave them today. What helped also was that the O-line was very impressive, they gave him all day to play.
I watched the first half. I could hear the "doh" from Austin when Snead threw the pick. I think McCoy is keeping the job warm for Snead. I wonder what the rotation will be against Ohio St. It's Major/Chris all over again if Texas drops a few games (Ohio St., OU). Only difference is if Snead takes over he won't be replacing the Big 12 Player of the Year.
Boy... McCoy better bring his A-game next week. Ohio State's offense look pretty good so far. Ginn looks pretty dangerous and Troy Smith has definitely improved. I hope UT will be able to run against their defense because we need to keep OSU's offense off the field.
Saw the first half looked pretty solid and pretty mobile. I was impressed of course the real test is next week. Which one of these guys was the bigger recruit coming out of high school?
Snead was definitely a bigger recruit... McCoy came from a small school, so nobody knew how good he was going to be.
to be fair, the first 2 TDs, the DBs simply got outplayed by the Ginn. his last TD was a very precise pass though.
you think so? it looked to me that McCoy was clearly more comfortable and a cut above Snead. Snead threw the ball harder and had a few drops, but the offense didn't look as smooth with him out there. McCoy looked a clear cut number 1.
being glad we didn't play him later in the season might be ok (though UT was better too, and would have won by more), but not being glad he didn't play the whole game. he did almost nothing against us last year. he threw a very nice td pass, but then mixed it in with some 3 and outs and/or fg's on very short fields (after turnovers), threw a surefire pick 6 to kelson who dropped it when it hit him right b/t the numbers, got safetied, and didn't do much running the ball. if their TE hadn't dropped the easy pass from zwick, then both qb's basically looked the same, which wasn't very good against our D. however, tOSU's offense does look very good today. granted, having a receiver 10 yards open is a little ridiculous and playing a team that's shanking punts to the 20 and throwing horrible INT's doesn't say much, but they still look very very sharp. i'm not looking forward to trying to stop them. as for mccoy, his numbers look better than how he actually played. that's not to say he played poorly, as he definitely looks like he knows how to play QB and can make throws, but he basically did what everyone thought he would, just took care of the offense. along the way though, a 20 yard crossing route got turned into a 60 yard TD b/c a db missed a tackle and a 4 yard out route turned into a 35 yard TD b/c sweed broke the first tackle, then stiff armed a guy, then out ran another. so he did what he was supposed to and then some good things happened against inferior athletes and made the stats really nice. he did have two forced throws that are worrisome for next week. everyone will have bad throws, but they should happen under pressure, and these didn't. one he got flushed out of the pocket at about the 20 but pretty much ended up in open field by the sideline. he could've run for some yards or thrown it away, instead he threw it into a group of about 3 recievers and 3 DB's in the endzone. it even bounced up in the air off someone but luckily fell to the ground. he threw another to a WR in the middle of 3 defenders which was very forced and luckily wasn't picked. if it had been perfect, it would've been complete, but it's not the type of pass to throw down by the goalline when you've pretty much got points on the board already with a fg. hopefully he plays well next week.
francis I thought mccoy looked better than the stats. his stats were good but weren't there like 3 dropped passes? who knows how he will be next week but I thought he looked excellent. snead has a gun on his shoulder but mccoy looks better, more composed and more accurate.
McCoy looked MUCH better than Snead. I hope they redshirt Snead next year so these guys don't cross over too much. I think McCoy is a keeper, he looks very Major Applewhitish.....at least in his poise. DD
No way they redshirt Snead, he is officially our backup QB and we need him in case something happens to McCoy. Plus, we have Brantley coming next year who already plans on redshirting.
granted, there were 2 drops i can remember, and i'm not saying every touchdown has to be a perfectly placed 40 yard bomb right over the outstretched arms of two defensive backs to count, but when you have a 20 yard pass go for a 60 yard TD b/c a north Texas-level athlete misses a tackle and then a 4 yard pass to the flats go for a 35 yard TD b/c 2 separate guys miss the tackle (one who was there right after the completion), then your numbers get inflated. the third TD came off a 1st and goal at the 5 where we threw two incomplete passes then basically did a handoff with the shuffle pass and got a TD. so while he certainly looked accurate and poised, the 3 TD's weren't really indicative of what he did. he guided the offense like we wanted and guys made plays they'll only make against the rice's and UNT's of the world. he wasn't throwing well-placed seam routes into the endzone or anything (he's saving those for tOSU).
Agreed. Although it was against North Texas, Colt's passes just looked crisp and he threw the routes perfectly. If the WR's didn't drop a few of the catchable throws his stats would have looked much better. Can't wait for next week.
I was at the game and I am siding with the group that say McCoy's numbers look better than his actual performance. Texas ran a large number of side-to-side passing plays, screens similar to the plain vanilla offense Texas ran prior to Vince Young. Not a lot of opportunity to make passing mistakes in such sets and also not the kind of sets that allows one to make form an opinion on a quarterbacks judgement ability. About the only thing I think one can form an opinion on from watching this game is mechanics. I was disturbed by the loft McCoy put on a lot of his throws. The guy does not have a very strong arm. Didn't see him get to throw the ball downfield to judge his accuracy, but if you are running screens as your primary passing attack, I would like to see the ball spend less time in the air than I saw on Saturday. Jevan Snead on the other hand has a very powerful arm which would be better suited for the snap and quick throws to the sideline I saw on Saturday. Didn't see enough snaps from Snead to form much of an opinion on his judgement, but can say that his down field interception was more the fault of the receiver than Snead. Before I move on, I should add that Snead came off more confident to me than McCoy in his few snaps. On a side note, the receivers dropped several passes that should have been caught during this game. Let's hope that is not a sign of things to come. Running game: Also a lot of side to side plays in the game. I really wonder whether Greg Davis should be using his dominant O-line more to push opponents straight back in the running game. Charles and Young were good, but not great today. Lacking were long runs which one would expect against an opponent like North Texas. Stay tuned. Defense: Very solid. Should be a dependable constant throughout the season. Would have liked to see more turnovers, but the pass rush and the run stuffing worked to perfection. The defensive speed was also evident. No juking or hesitation for opposing backs or receivers or they are likely to find themselves missing out on 4 or 5 yards that would have been gained without the fake.
I'm pretty sure your point on Vince Young for the past year, including and after the Rose Bowl, was that Reggie McNeal was much more talented and going to be a better NFL QB. Does that remain your point given that he was cut yesterday? Just wondering.
You might want to re-read what you just quoted, which specifically mentions *prior* to Vince. Last year, the UT offense was much more vertical, which was so nice after many years of the horizontal passing game.
