The Horns will rekindle another old SWC conference rivalry this weekend. Kickoff is 11AM on Saturday. Who's going? The drinking will commence at 8:30AM with bloody mary's at the apartment. Then onto Scholz's at 9 for some Bud Light. Hornfans.com tailgate at 9:30, then the Texas Wranglers tailgate at 10AM. Onto the stadium with a fifth of Crown around 10:45 to sing the Eyes of Texas.

This game should be a runaway after halftime. I expect the first half to be fairly low scoring, with the Horns leading like 13-3. Arkansas will hold the ball for some long, sustained drives, but the Horns defense will bend, not break. But Texas has too many weapons and will simply tire out the Hogs in the 2nd half, and I expect a victory close to 34 - 13.

    Arkansas
    Things to watch for:
Cedric Cobbs - the team's top running back, rushed for 145 on just 12 carries last week vs. Tulsa. Torched the Horns in the 2000 Cotton Bowl last time the two teams met. Matt Jones is an elusive QB, who's a good running threat, but can't throw the ball to save his life. DB, Lawrence Richardson will face the daunting task of playing man coverage on Roy. Good luck Mr. Richardson...

Arkansas is predominantly a running team. They play smash mouth football, led by their 350 lb. TE and all-SEC OT. On D, they play mostly man, relying on LB stunts and blitzes to disrupt the opposing QBs. The last team to try to cover the Horns' receivers man-to-man was the 2002 Huskers...resulting in Simms throwing for 419 yards. Ouch.

    Texas
    Things to watch for:
Early Vince Young sightings. Mack wanted to play him early against NMSU, but didn't have the chance since we were held scoreless in the 1st. Expect to see Young sometime in the first half, as a change of pace.

BJ Johnson. He didn't have a reception a couple of weeks ago. Arkansas will be keying in on Roy, leaving BJ wide open frequently this Saturday. Mock needs to call some audibles, and let BJ run some deep posts or fly patterns when he's playing against man coverage.

Running the ball. On a hot Austin day, nothing wears out opposing defenses more than a running game that is reeling off 5-6 yards a pop. Cedric needs to hit the holes harder this game, otherwise, Selvin Young will continue to eat into his playing time.

Special Teams. Young and Vasher are two of the most dangerous return men in the nation. The Hogs would be wise not to kick it their way, as they are a big play waiting to happen.

Defensive Front Seven. Look for Rod Wright and Marcus Tubbs to plug the middle and keep Cobbs from running in-between the tackles. Pickryl played well against NMSU, and Thornton was a beast. Brian Robison and Aaron Harris replace an injured Garnet Smith at MLB - a critical position against a running team. As always Derrick Johnson will be counted on to make key stops on 3rd down.

Game will be televised regionally on ABC. Hook 'em.

Unlike 2001, I would like to see Mack rotate QB's this season. Not on every down like Spurrier, but maybe depending on the game situation and what the defense is giving us. Their contrasting playing styles can be murder on opposing defenses as the game goes on. This is not a Major vs. Chris situation, it's totally different.

Cedric better pick it up or I can see Selvin starting by mid-season.

I hope UT kills arkansas. Their leaving the SWC was the beginning of the end. Bastards.

I go to school at the University of Central Arkansas, and I have to say, being from out of state, there is nothing more I hate than the Razorbacks. Imagine if Texas A&M were the only university in the state of Texas and everyone worshipped them because there wasn't any other team to root for...That is kind of what I compare it to up here. The fans honesty believe they should be competing for a national title every year and every big name coach in college wants to come to Fayetteville and coach "The Hogs."

Arkansas fans have to be the most annoying in the country, I can't believe that they are/should be an elite program year in, year out.

I mentioned this old SWC rivalry a few weeks ago and how it was going to be renewed this year. I can't wait either and don't forget we got the best of Texas last time in the Cotton Bowl. :)

You are very correct. That is because we only have one other Division I school here in Arkansas and that is Arkansas State which sucks c*ck royally in every athletic program they have except rugby. What pisses me off is that Arkansas will play these sorry Div. I schools like Tulsa, North Texas, and New Mexico State, but the AD there, F. Broyles, who some have nicknamed The King, refuses to schedule a game against A-State for fear of losing. I like the Hogs and hate ther Indians but I wish the two would play because the Razorbacks would demolish the Indians.

In the preseason assessment of the schedule this one I had a gut feeling was a loss so needless to say, this one worries me.

I would be worried if this was a road game, but I think we should be able to take care of Arkansas at home. I think it will be a close game unless special teams breaks it open (Mack Brown factor). UT's running game still sucks. Brown better be prepared to juggle playing time if VY plays well again. VY will have to throw the ball cause he will not get 12 yards per carry against Arkansas. UT needs to spread the ball out to more receivers. Seeing Vasher and S. Young playing special teams at the sametime should be fun.

...and I believe that plays into the hands of Arkansas.

    '00 Cotton Bowl **

** - No players in this weekend's game played for their respected team in that game thus I do not think that will have much impact on this one

That's also the day I lost any respect for Houston Nutt. I can understand players getting so involved in the game/rivalry and flashing the upside down Hook 'Em sign after beating UT, but seeing their coach do this after the Cotton Bowl loss has always stuck in my mind.

Now, of course, he's trying to backpeddle his way out of it.

By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – Arkansas coach Houston Nutt's explanation for flashing an upside-down hook 'em Horns sign in the final minute of the Razorbacks' 2000 Cotton Bowl victory over Texas will probably never get to Longhorns players.

Not that they're looking for one.

They're too busy using it as bulletin-board material for Saturday's showdown in Austin between the once storied rivals. When Texas players pick up their pads before practice each day, they see an 8-by-10 photograph of Nutt's gesture.

"It's right there when we pick up our equipment," linebacker Reed Boyd said.

Nutt tried to explain his actions on a conference call with reporters Monday. He said it was more of a reflex from having grown up in Arkansas and having played for the Razorbacks.

"The people who know what I'm about, know I would never do the downward-horns sign to an opposing coach, player or fan," Nutt said. "It was at the end of a ballgame. You've got the feeling that you've won one of the biggest games of your life.

"From the time I was kid, every Arkansas fan did the hook 'em sign down. Our fans were doing the hook 'em sign down, and all I did was answer them back. It was not meant as a demeaning thing to Coach Brown or his players. He'll probably use it. I would, too."

Oh, he's using it. Brown even addressed the subject Monday at his weekly press conference.

"A lot has been made of Houston Nutt doing the upside-down hook 'em during the Cotton Bowl game on the sideline," Brown said. "I see that all the time. But I've never seen a coach do that. So that surprised me.

"My life might be different from some coaches. So what some do and what I would do might be different. It doesn't mean it's right or wrong or fair. I guess it's just the way you're raised. I just thought it was unusual."

Nutt's downturned hook 'em sign sticks in the mind of some Arkansas players. Shawn Andrews, a junior offensive lineman from Camden, Ark., was at home watching the Cotton Bowl with his mother that day.

"I didn't really understand it at first, but I thought it was kind of neat," Andrews said.

Former Texas coach Darrell Royal and former Arkansas coach Frank Broyles have even weighed in on the subject.

"I just think there are other ways of expressing yourself," Royal said.

Broyles said: "I don't think that's any big deal. He was doing it to our Arkansas fans. ... Everyone in the world has done it. The Oklahomas and Texas A&Ms have done it. It's not like we originated it. I wouldn't worry about it."

Longhorn Fans, remember this when the game begins:

Reminds me of John Jenkins grabbing a megaphone and yelling "same ol' Rice" after running it up on them.

    What a classless bum.

Cedric Cobbs was a true freshman that year. He sat out one year because of legal or academic problems, so this is his 5th year in Fayetteville. Cobbs stomped a mudhole in our asses that game... Needless to say, I've been to every Texas home game since the middle of 1998, and I've only seen two losses, NCSU and KSU, both in 1999. The Horns play with a different kind of intensity at home, and have a 20 game winning streak here to prove it.

Arkansas will be in for a rough second half, when Larry Dibbles, Stevie Lee, and Marco Martin all come in to give Tubbs and Wright a rest. When Pick and Kalen need a rest, we have Austin Sendlein and Chase Pittman ready to go. The LB's are spelled by studs like Marcus Myers, Aaron Harris, and Eric Foreman. On the offensive side, Bo Scaife, David Thomas, and Neale Tweedie provide significant depth, and allow us to use a two-TE set. Not to mention Sloan Thomas, Tony Jeffery, and Brian Carter can all step up and make the big catch. I've already mentioned the two-prong attack of VY and Mock. The Hogs simply don't have the depth that the Horns do, and will worked in the 2nd half.

I like this point that you bring up. I beginning to think that our switching quarterbacks with Major and Simms didn't work because it wasn't planned. I think its okay as long as the team knows that they will be switching before hand. Excellent idea drummer.

I think someone mentioned it previously, but didn't Cedric Cobbs play for the Razorbacks in that Cotton Bowl? I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure he did. I was pretty junk from all that year 2000 partying, though.

Also, wasn't that the game that Aaron Humphries (Humphrey??) and Kwame Cavil got suspended for??
