My understanding is that he was Kubiak's first choice when he was first hired as head coach...but was unavailable then. Now that he's on staff, I suppose it's logical that if you already know who you want to have the job...and he's in-house...he gets it by default.
So how did this guy end up on our staff as an assistant if he was in line to be our the def coor in the first place? It just doesn't make sense... this doesn't seem like much of a hiring as it is just moving around the deck chairs on the titanic
What if our offense is the best in the league and we go 16-0 despite a crappy defense? Should Kubiak still be fired?
Kubiak is coaching for his job next year. The #1 issue that will determine his fate is Schaub. He and Kubiak will live or die together as Texans. After that, the defense, which is dependent on the draft, free agency and this new coordinator.
Bush was originally tapped by Kubiak to be co-DC with Smith. He was not allowed to interview because he was under contract with AZ at the time. When his contract ran out he joined the staff as a senior defensive consultant. THis probably means will be getting a lot of the same thing we have gotten with Smith.
According to the article, the Texans wanted to interview Jerry Grey but were denied permission by Washington. They also hired Alex Gibbs' son to coach the secondary. He comes from KC, Hoke was just hired by Chicago.
I think what he mean is, if we wanted him to be DC all along, why did we make him an assistant when he came over instead of giving him the DC job immediately? The answer, I'm guessing, is that it was kind of out of loyalty to Smith and that maybe they believe he hadn't been given enough of a fair chance at proving or hanging himself. So instead of firing Smith earlier, they gave him what they deemed a fair shot and he ended up hanging himself, leave the position open for Bush.
That's it exactly. Because they weren't gonna fire Smith at that point. They hired his heir apparent. I'm not defending the move, by the way....I don't know enough to have a strong opinion on this.
again...he was on our staff and he was the first choice prior. he's been the presumed replacement for quite some time now in articles i've read.
