Here's a really wierd thought. If the Texans were on the verge of going into the playoffs as say an 8-7 team with very little shot of moving on, would you want them to make the playoffs the first year?

Before you say, "HELL YEAH!" think about the ramifications. If they do make the playoffs in their first year, they will automatically foreit SEVEN draft choices in 2003.

Would it be worth it???

Uh, oh...You wouldn't be talking about tanking for a better draft situation would you?

come on, jeff... not a chance in hell they'll be .500, let alone a playoff contender.

hate to piss on everyone's parade, but... not happening. we might as well discuss my chances with cameron diaz.

...and mine with Jennifer Love Hewitt

I certainly don't want them to make the playoffs though. It would hinder our growth for the future and we would turn out like another Carolina xcept not as old.

That reminds me Ric, she was asking about you the other day. :D

In answer to Jeff's question, I'd have to say, it would be better if we missed the playoffs the first year. Even, if it means tanking the second to last game. The Titans are going down in that last game!

Just to point it out, last year the records of the other 3 teams in our division were:

Tenessee: 7-9
Jacksonville: 6-10
Indianapolis: 6-10

In that division, .500 would get you in the playoffs, and 5-11 would make you a 'contender', IMO.

That's why they call it a "What if" question. The reason I asked is because Rich and Charlie brought it up on 610 this afternoon. I don't think anyone in his/her right mind honestly believes they will have a shot at the playoffs. I'm just posing the question because I think it is an interesting question.

I would want them to make the playoffs. That is the goal for every team at the beginning of the year. Once you get in you have as good a shot as anyone to win the whole thing. The NFL is a little different than the NBA best of 7 format. You have a chance.

Sure, it would be worth it. I mean, what's the point of risking your body to injury if you don't try to win every game. If you can't get the players you want in the college draft, free agency is always a possibility, espcially with the facilities the Texans will have. Cripes, not every pro team in Houston has to tank in order to be successful!

BTW, did anyone see Dale Robertson's prediction that we will go 0-4 before we win a game? LOL!:D Oh sure, we're going to lose to Dallas. R-I-G-H-T!!

Talent-wise the Texans are capable of being .500, if you consider their apparent weak schedule (though with the NFL you never know).

The problem is, that you will have 53 players who are in a new system. So it will take a long time to mesh. I expect the Texans to go on a slow start, and end the year on a good note. 6-10 is my prediction.

Moreover, the Texans do not know how well their players fit in their system (obviously), so there might be many players who are square pegs who are trying to fit into round holes.

Year 2, is when the Texans could contend for the playoffs, when they know which guys will fit, and which ones won't.

I just hope the Texans go easy on the rest of the league. Having an undefeated season and then destroying the Rams in the Super Bowl would be generally disheartening to players around the NFL who have been trying their whole lives to place themselves in that kind of situation. I think it would be in everyone's best interests to tank more than half of the Texans games, and then open up an industrial-sized can of whipass on the league in 2003.

Please, Houston, don't hurt em'. ;)

If we make the playoffs the first year, then we are a playoff team. Why would we need the additional draft picks?
