I really doubt the Texans win this game. The Jags are a lot better team than earlier in the season.

I have to disagree. They'd lost three in a row before beating the horrendous Bears and a mediocre Packer team that's lost a few games at Lambeau already this season. They also started the season 3-0. The Texans' defense is playing the best it has all season and Fred Taylor's questionable. Not to mention that this is a big rivalry game to the two teams, so I think it'd be close regardless.

Houston: Jaguars have problem with 'rivalry' description

You can't fault them for trying, but as far as the Jaguars are concerned, the Houston Texans seem to be taking this whole "rivalry'' thing -- and we use quotation marks for a reason -- a bit too far.

And if it's not too far, then it's certainly too fast.

Today's visitors to Alltel Stadium have spent much of the past week and entirely too much of their first three seasons in the NFL doing everything they can to pick a fight with the Jaguars.

Bulletin-board material has been flying out of Houston leading up to this afternoon's game, which is crucial to the 8-6 Jaguars' budding hopes of their first playoff berth since 1999.

Houston is 6-8 and just about mathematically eliminated from the postseason, but by the way the Texans have been talking the past few days, you would almost think this is the most important game on their schedule.

"I know they don't like us, and we don't particularly like them," Houston quarterback David Carr said.

Defensive lineman Gary Walker, one of six former Jaguars players or coaches now with Houston, went a step further.

"It's always big to play Jacksonville," Walker said.

To this, the Jaguars say: Huh?

Sorry to disappoint the Texans, the Jaguars say, but five games doesn't a rivalry make in the NFL -- especially when one team hasn't been in the playoffs this decade and the other didn't exist as recently as 2001.

While the Texans already are proclaiming Jacksonville a bitter rival, an informal poll of the Jaguars' locker room this week didn't produce one player who puts Houston anywhere in the same light.

Pittsburgh and Tennessee? Definitely. Indianapolis? Now that seems to have potential, especially since the Jaguars have upset Peyton Manning and the Colts twice in the past three meetings.

But the Texans don't come anywhere close to prompting harsh words from the Jaguars, even though Houston has a 3-2 series edge, and their yawning fans appear to agree. Nearly 10,000 tickets were still unsold late in the week for what is stacking up as Jacksonville's most important game in years.

"We respect [the Texans], just like we respect every team, but this game is big on its own merits," running back Fred Taylor said. "We're thinking about trying to get into the playoffs and not about anything else.''

Added Jaguars free safety Deon Grant: "They're a good team, and they've already beaten us once this year [20-6 in October], so you have to tip your hat to them."

That's not to say the Jaguars don't have a few hard feelings left over from their loss in Houston on Halloween, most of them stemming from what Jacksonville players considered some cheap shots and dirty play by the Texans.

Defensive tackle John Henderson still is fuming at Houston long snapper Bryan Patterson for choking him on a fake punt. Henderson was so enraged that he immediately retaliated, prompting a 15-yard personal foul penalty.

The Jaguars also didn't appreciate Texans running back Jonathan Wells starting a fight on their sideline in the final seconds, nor are they entirely sure Walker didn't mean to twist Byron Leftwich's left knee on a tackle in the first half.

Leftwich sprained his knee on that play, an injury that caused him to miss the next two games, but the Jaguars' quarterback did nothing this week to fan what the Texans apparently consider a bitter feud.

"I don't believe it was done to try to hurt me," Leftwich said this week. "Sometimes things like that happen."

When asked this week if the Texans are a rival that the Jaguars would be seeking revenge against, especially since October's game was so physical, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio referred to Houston merely as "a division opponent."

In other words, the Texans might want to wait a few more years -- and play a few games in December that matter -- before anointing anyone a rival.

If not, then they shouldn't expect Jacksonville to help them. The Jaguars have much bigger things in mind.

Sorry guys. The season is officially over in terms of playoffs. I love watching the Texans win, but a nice draft pick would be nice. And that's kinda hard with the pathetic NFC.

At this point i'd just like to get good draft picks. Our last 2 #1's worked magic in their 1st year. A julius Peppers or Lee Suggs type that can put pressure on the opposing teams QB would be nice. That's something we're really missing.

Big win for the Texans today. Knock J'vill out of the playoffs. Maybe, hopefully, finally get some respect from the national press.
