This is from ESPN insider - Texans may be interested in Michael Bennett as a 3rd RB. I think it's bogus we just signed A Smith and have Vernand Morency to back him up. Bennett is pricey @ $3mm for 1 year.

    WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY

    Michael Bennett
    Saints Texans?
    Dolphins? Bennett on the block
<May. 11> Less than two months after signing with the Saints, Bennett could find his career on a different course for 2006. Saints officials have spoken to at least two teams, ESPN.com Len Pasquarelli has confirmed, about trading Bennett, who was bumped down a notch on the depth chart when New Orleans chose Reggie Bush in last month's draft.
The most in-depth discussions have been with the Texans, and there has also been dialogue with the Dolphins in recent days.

Bennett was signed by the Saints as an unrestricted free agent on March 17, at a time when New Orleans was seeking an established tailback to back up Deuce McAllister and had no idea Bush would be available at the No. 2 slot in the draft. The two-year, $3 million contract Bennett signed with the Saints is fairly pricey for a No. 3 tailback.

It appears his salary averages $1.5 million per year.

This had to be prior to the Smith signing. With Morencey as the 3rd and the late draft pick (can't remember his name) as 4th/practice squad, there is no need to pay another RB $3 mill over 2 years.

In Kubiak's offense, you can't have too many RB's. But that's too much money. This is probably an old report, before the Smith signing.

Yeah, even with Denver's unique approach to the running back position, it wouldn't make sense to sign Bennett after we got Smith. Probably an old report, as others have mentioned.

The ESPN "rumor" is dated today. Not that that means anything.

Hmmm. Either it's just a rumor (most likely), or maybe the Texans know something about DD's injury that they're not saying. I wonder if the new staff is high on Morency or not. I guess it's still too early to know.

We got that running back, and we signed Damien Rhodes, a pretty good undrafted rookie out of Syracuse.

I don't think it's accurate. We've already got DD, Smith, Morency, and Wali Lundy. Plus, like EWS said, we even signed an undrafted rookie RB. (And Jonathan Wells is still listed on the roster for some reason.) The Texans don't need an expensive backup backup RB.

this would be awesome. i thought it was a great signing by the saints when it happened, and would be a great acquisition by us. he's as explosive as they come, can take it to the house from anywhere, and would basically be a reggie bush light for us.

i'm getting pretty excited about this team.

I agree, you can't have too many, but what about Wells?

Wells is an UFA, I don't see us resigning him.

Hmmm. I wonder who we offered. I'll bet we offered Buchanon straight up and that's why they "rebuffed" :D

I doubt it since Buchanon is probably going to be our starting CB next to Dunta. Kubiak already said that he was going to give him a fresh start, and we haven't improved our secondary. I remember reading that we were going to switch to more zone coverage, where he won't have to stay on one man.

I'd prefer Bennet over Smith...but now that we have Smith, its not really worth getting another RB.

When healthy, Bennett had electrifying speed and the ability to make a big play from anywhere on the field. Yes, it's been a while since he's healthy. But if the Texans believe he is, he's in an entirely different league from Antowain Smith... I'd take him in a heartbeat if they feel comfortable with the injury risk, despite all the other backs on the roster.

He's certainly an upgrade over Tony Hollings!

I'd be happy with Bennett. He provides quality depth with major upside of possibly being capable of replacing DD.

Keep in mind, in Denver last year, they ran 3 running backs quite a bit - Tatum Bell, Mike Anderson, and Ron Dayne. Dayne was limited, but nevertheless he played even when the other two were healthy.
