    Shanahan's son hired by Texans

    January 30, 2006

HOUSTON (AP) -- The Houston Texans hired Broncos assistant Troy Calhoun as offensive coordinator and Kyle Shanahan as wide receivers coach on Monday.

Shanahan, 24, son of Denver coach Mike Shanahan, has worked the past two seasons as the offensive quality control coach in Tampa Bay. New Texans coach Gary Kubiak was Mike Shanahan's offensive coordinator in Denver for 11 seasons.

Before moving to Denver, Calhoun, 39, was the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest from 2001-02. The Demon Deacons led the Atlantic Coast Conference in total offense in 2002 with 408.1 yards per game.

Calhoun became a defensive assistant in Denver in 2003 and was an offensive assistant and coached the Broncos' special teams in 2004.

Kyle Shanahan graduated in 2003 from the University of Texas after playing wide receiver for the Longhorns' football team. He worked one season as a graduate assistant at UCLA and joined the Buccaneers' staff before the 2004 season.

The Texans also announced Monday they have retained special teams coach Joe Marciano, defensive backs coach Jon Hoke and running backs coach Chick Harris.

I'm sure Kyle is a sharp kid, but who will listen to him? What's his resume? Obviously, he has the pedigree.

I was listening to McClain this morning on 610 and he said that he's been talking to a bunch of people around the league and they all said that we will love the guy.

    F- Troy Calhoun.

Let's hire Haystack Calhoun to coach OL instead.

Cancel that...let's hire him to BE the OL.

Obviously Kubiak is very high on Calhoun. It is rumored that Shanahan offered Kubiak to pick either Dennison or Calhoun to come to his staff, and he chose Calhoun because although Dennison has created a pretty good OLine, he feels that Calhoun has an overall better understanding of the game of football and is a genius when it comes to play calling.

Yeah, because he might not have performed to your expectations at Texas, he's hopeless as a player, coach, and anything related to football... sure.

No, I knew Kyle from my days at UT. Total jackass.

His roommate, your boy Simms, was a pretty nice guy though.

Oh, ok... my apologies man. I thought you were talking about on the field. He wasn't exactly that good, but well, I don't think anyone expected him to be. :p But yeah, if he was a jackass off the field, I see what you mean... my bad.
