I notice when people mention Kubiak they mention Smith. Are they tied to the hip? If Kubes go is it automatic Smith goes? I cannot say he has been a BAD GM. [Maybe Average to above Average actually] Where do you rate him as a GM? Rocket River
tell me what you disagree about my post. Seems like you've toned down a bit after that God awful performance on Saturday. It's like you didn't expect it or something.
I don't think they are tied together. If the Texans miss the playoffs, I would blame Kubiak far more than him. He is an above average drafter, but not so good at completing free agent signings.
Reeko, tell me about the 2008 Detroit Lions. Dudes were freakin' dominant in the preseason, 4-0!!!!! Definite playoff contender at a minimum, right?
toned down a bit? how so? I'm still excited to watch what this team does during the season despite the poor performance against the saints. mediocre at best. I disagree. He is mediocre, at worst. Drafting, B- . that's just silly. Youre so disgruntled and jaded it's really not even funny. At the very least he is a SOLID B. I'm sure you wanted to give him a C+ but you didnt want to get totally flamed. I can understand the FA part since they have never signed a huge FA name but that rarely happens to begin with. Picking up pollard and smith are no slouch moves. I would agree that the signing of older backs backfired a few years in a row, but they have seemed to learn their lesson.
And as for why people don't take you seriously, here's an independent view of how Rick Smith has done in his tenure with the Texans, with his primary job to rebuild through the draft (young players). You can see how the Texans stack up. http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/blog/2010/07/espn_texans_tops_in_under-25_talent.html
Drafting I would have to say a solid B if not an B+ but you cannot hit a homerun everytime. Pollard is his definative Free Agent Signing everything else has been subpar Rocket River
If C is average, a B- is not an unfair assessment, which would be above average. And like always, you are incorrect about the bolded statement
the dude engineered a trade for matt the great, had morey done that deal we all would be naming our first born children.. daryl.
I wouldn't say that Antonio Smith has been subpar. Joel Dreesen and Eugene Wilson have been solid too. (Was going to say Kevin Walter, but I think that might have been right before Smith got here.)
Rick Smith = B Gary Kubiak = C+ We've built a talented roster, and while all the players are "Kubiak guys", Rick Smith is still responsible for getting them here. Kubiak, on the other hand, has severely limited the talent built with bad calls in key situations and poor clock management. Smith's had a few free agent busts, but the contracts haven't been that atrocious ... and in the NFL, you can afford to take more gambles on free agents with the non-guaranteed contracts. At least he didn't sign Albert Haynesworth.
If Smith and Kubiak are tied together, I think it would be justified to keep Kubes around just for the sake of retaining Smith. Smith is savvy. Kubes? Not so much.
At the very least, it should've been only one 2nd round pick like the Chiefs did for Cassel. Oh well, what's done is done.
A B- is considered slightly above average. Considering the roster Smith inherited, and the fact that the Texans' young talent is universally considered among the tops in the entire league, and you're on crack if you think the job Smith has done with acquiring young talent is only slightly better than the norm.
