Head coach Gary Kubiak told the media Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that the Texans are determined to improve their pass rush this offseason. Smith discusses Robinson Kubiak talks draft needs Kubiak also talks about the possibility of moving mario to the left and also the possibility of moving demeco to a diffirent linebacker position. he talks about the good drafts theyve had in the past and how the new coaches will do and what we can expect. I think our biggest need is a pass rusher opposite mario. and a Defensive back wether its a corner or safety (preferably safety) and a running back to complement Slaton. If we would get a corner i would like alphonso smith from wake forest. altho he is a little undersized i think he can be realy good esspecialy if we can pick him up in the second round.
It is for this reason, I can't get excited over the Texan draft. It generally takes defensive guys a couple of years before they become something worth being excited over. So, eh...okay. So we'll draft defensive guys...yippee?
Beware of smokescreens this time of year!! Mario on the left side makes more sense b/c he's so big and can stand up to the double teams and also opens up the possibility of drafting a smaller, lighter DE to be a speed rusher (something Mario is not) on the right side (Orakpo, Maybin, and Everett). On DeMeco, I guess that means they'd be open to drafting a MLB in the first round (Ray Maualuga at 15 or maybe James Laurinaitis if we move down) or even an OLB (like Cushing) if that's what it takes. Well played by Kubiak, informative but not giving out too much.
So you'd rather us draft "exciting" offensive players and let our defense continue to suck? Would you rather us have taken Bush a couple years ago instead of Mario? It does take a lot of defenders longer, but not always. Just look at what DeMeco Ryans did his first year here.
So you'd rather pass on good defensive players just because it take them a couple years to get you excited? For the Texans alone, guys like DeMeco, Bennett, Diles, and Adibi have all been pretty good their 1st/2nd years. As for other defensive players (drafted mid-1st round) like Keith Rivers, Mayo, Rodgers-Cromartie, Laron Landry, Patrick Willis, Revis, Ngata, Cromartie, etc...have all been very good players very early in their careers.
Ok, but even by your logic you should be getting psyched to see Molden come into shape this year and Adibi and Diles round into form too. That also means we may finally start seeing big things from Okoye!
When they drafted Mario it wasn't exciting? How bout When Demeco won DROY and has made a few pro bowls? Fred Bennett came into the lineup halfway through his rookie season and played fantastic, but not exciting? Same for Adibi this year? Not sure what else you could ask for. Pretty much every defensive player they draft has made an impact from the getgo
Heads up ladies. There is a blog on BSPN about who we are looking at. They talk about Orakpo (I hope he falls to 15) and linebacker Matthew Jr from USC and his interest in Houston. These are two positions we need. It'd be nice to grab them both. myespn.go.com/blogs/nflnation?tag=09%20combine
The first two rounds the Texans should and need to draft a DE or DT or Safety. We are dangerously thin in the FS position on our team and we have needed someone that can provide a solid pass rush opposite Mario Williams since 2006. After that, we should draft a compliment RB for Slaton and some offensive line depth. Other then that potential draft picks include maybe a tight end (if we lose Dressen), linebacker, corner back and maybe a quarterback.
No. It still isn't. He's a good, solid player and all but it isn't exciting. Those are all nice surprises. Keyword = surprises. As they are on the field 90% of the time, let's hope those impacts remain positive! (just kidding)
I'm intrigued by Kubiak's comments regarding free agency, it sounds like we might be ready to make a splash.
we all know the needs, and we must cover all of them, whatever it takes.. even if we have to trade down for more picks. stockpile dem' picks.
Well you seemed to imply that you'd rather us draft "exciting" players regardless of whether they are on offense or defense, and then said that defensive players take a while to come into their own...which would lead me to believe you'd rather see us draft an "exciting" offensive player. I'm always excited about the draft, especially with this regime, because we're going to improve the team. I could care less whether our picks are "sexy"; I was very pleased last year to trade down for Duane Brown and pick up an extra third rounder. I could actually see that happening again if the perfect DE or OLB isn't there when we pick.
I'd like to see Defense addressed all four picks on day one. Wait - we still do have our fourth round pick, right? I'm hoping for a solid pass-rushing option on the D-line opposite of Mario or an OLB who can put pressure on the QB. If it looks like there are some good options in those categories between picks 20 and 25, I wouldn't mind trading down to try to snag another pick in a later round. I hope we don't go after any offensive players before the 5th round at the earliest.
