What position should the Texans address with their first pick in next year's draft. I know it's early but I would like them to go after a running back like Chris Benson or Clarrett from Ohio State if he would come out early. What's your thoughts?
Those two are not going to be in the draft barring a legal action taken by either. Only redshirt sophomores and higher are eligible for the draft. And answering your question, I don't know who they will take.
Since they will get a pretty high pick, I think they should trade down a few spots and get Rogers. Who knows? They may even decide to get an offensive lineman. In the second round, I would like for them to select a running back. Third round, get a safety. The major areas of concern are the following: Offensive line, Wide receiver, Running back, Secondary. With all the draft picks, we should be able to fill the holes.
simple answer: they'll take the best available player, regardless of position: except, of course, QB. there's not a position on the team that couldn't use an upgrade: except, of course, quarterback. my money's on william joseph or jimmy kennedy.
No running backs until we get a decent offensive line. I think the top 2 needs are o-line and wide reciever. It would be nice if we could get both Jordan Gross (O-line from Utah) and Charles Rogers (Big Play Wide Reciever) We would have to trade down and not that far down because both of these guys are first round material.
As I understand it, there aren't very many really good O-line guys in the draft this year (or at least, not many deserving of such a high pick), so if they go best available (and I really think they should) then they likely won't get any O-line guys in the first round unless they trade down.
both are defensive linemen; kennedy's a giant, joseph has the skills to play inside and outside. at this early stage, there aren't two better prospects in college football, imo.
They probably won't pick an O-lineman like said previously because there isn't one worth a top 5 pick. Bank on this, if the Texans stay put and don't trade the pick it'll come down to Jimmy Kennedy or Charles Rogers. Outside shot to William Joseh and Roy Williams. With all the QB starved teams we will have the benefit of selecting whichever non-QB we want, even if we don't have the number one overall pick again. Personally I'd want Kennedy in the Steel Blue, we have no depth on the D-line, and Deloach would be a good backup but not starter. BTW, fans have a great chance to see both Charles Rogers and Jimmy Kennedy since Michigan State plays against Penn State this saturday.
I'm wondering if there's a nice trade out there. I know the Raiders got buku draft picks from the Bucs so maybe they're a possible gouge victim. I dunno who we'll draft but Charles Rogers seems to have fallen off the face of the Earth. He sure looked great early.
This is what I'd like to see: 1st round - Charles Rogers 2nd round - O line 3rd round - shore up the D (Ty Warren and Penright would be nice) all other rounds - fill in with depth.
Who's Chris Benson? Clarrett is good but I wouldnt pick him if he could come out early. Thats a disaster waiting to happen. The NFL is a grown man's game and no 18 year old is ready to play there yet.
He meant Cedric Benson, the running back for the Horns. He's a very solid player, but he is too young to enter the draft. He will probably rush for around 1200 yards this year.
Although I'm a huge football fan (and still playing, somewhat) it's mainly limited to Texas teams, so I have somewhat limited exposure to the national scene (that'll change come mid-January when I start actually looking at the draft). Right now, based upon what I've seen, I'd have to go with Kennedy from Penn State. I've always been of the somewhat contrary opinion that a good lineman is tougher to find and more important than a good RB or WR. While I'm not debating the fact that we need a gamebreaker at either of those positions, the fact is there are very few DL's who fit the quintessential 3-4 look. As long as Kennedy doesn't lose TOO much weight (already lost quite a bit) a guy 6-5, 320 is just what the Texans need in the middle. He looks to be a 2 gap player who can play off double teams (which he will see lots of as a nose tackle) and still quick enough to pursue tackle to tackle. If that happens (like everyone else, I don't see a top 5 pick going for an OL this year), I'd pay to see Sharper, Foreman, Mitchell, and Wong running around behind a wall of Walker (290 or so), Payne (305) and Kennedy (320). I know I'd feel safe behind them.
