I know that the 1995 Altanta Falcons have the record for giving up the most passing yards in a season. They were 4-2 in their first 6 games. They ended up 9-7 and made the playoffs. They were giving up 280 a game over the first 6 but they got worse and gave up an average of 330 over their last 5. Overall, they gave up 284 a game on the season.
What about The Colts prior to 2003? I'm not saying they were this bad but it seems like they were all offense and no defense. (That's just from memory) You could say the same for the Texans but they really have no defense which is really sad considering who they have on that side of the ball.
If you had to give a percentage of blame to the players vs. defensive coaches, how would you break it down? 50/50? Or is it mostly on the players (and GM and scouts by extension)? Do we simply lack the talent? Or is it mostly on the defensive coaches? Do they simply not to how to utilize/motivate the personnel? I haven't a clue. What do y'all think?
The Texans are like the Suns, no defense, but scores a lot. No matter if they score 30 points against you each game, if you score 31 you win. But I agree this is an awful defensive, and if your offense isnt clicking in the game then you are not going to win.
If that truly is the case, Kubiak and crew need to figure out a way to start putting up more of those points earlier in games. This degree of 4th quarter magic obviously won't hold up, esp. as we face some tougher opponents.
We definitely lack talent in the secondary, or at least experienced talent. The fact that we don't have enough players in the secondary who are ready to be full time starters is in the management. Kareem Jackson has sucked but it's hard to make an impact at corner as a rookie. The fact that we don't have 2 starting caliber CB's on the roster that would allow him to take a backseat for a season while he adjusts isn't his fault. There's talent on the D Line and in the linebacking corp, but they're underperforming. That's partly on the players and partly on the coaches. I'll say it's 40% management simply because leaving holes in the secondary going into the season has a trickle down effect to other areas of the defense (ie, afraid to blitz and putting too much pressure on the line to get consistent pressure on the QB with a 4 man rush). Then it's 30/30 or 35/25 coaches and players.
The front four needs to wake up. Pressure will create opportunities for turnovers and raise the confidence of the secondary. KJ will get all the talent beaten out of him if he alone is giving up 100+ yards a game.
If the Texans don't trade for a veteran corner, they will absolutely deserve every future defeat this season.
Dunta Robinson being the lone example...His best year being his rookie year. He was outstanding, but has seemingly regressed each year, and even Atlanta blogs have been concerned about paying top dollar for a slightly above average corner. We miss Reeves, face it...He covered fairly well. I can live with a linebacker/safety run support safety in Pollard, but everyone else needs to go or be challenged., and we need the D-line to get to the QB more...It def. seems to be the scheme as well I think...i.e. not having the right formations
I didn't want to say this for fear of getting flamed, but I agree, we miss "Toast." He's available... maybe he's coming in for a workout today.
Yep, Reeves would be the corner i'd pickup at this point. He could cover just never played the DAM ball.
I honestly didn't think we should've cut him in the first place. When do you think they'll release the names of who we're working out?
