The Texans rounded out their coaching staff by hiring Bill Kollar (assistant head coach/defensive line) and David Gibbs (secondary). Both are excited to take the defense to the next level. Texans name Kollar defensive line coach Texans tab Gibbs as secondary coach

I think david gibbs could be a good coach for this team esppecialy if hes anything like his dad... he has coached some good DBs lets see wat he can do with ours.

The nepotism doesn't bother me as much as some. If you were in a position to hire someone who would directly effect your effectiveness and potentially cost you your job down the line, you'd want to go with someone that you had the most confidence in. If you've worked with someone and you deeply know their philosophies, work ethic and general prowess of course that person is going to have a leg up on anyone else whom you only have interviews, references and an outsider's view of their body of work. Interviews are easy to ace if you know what to say, references can't always be trusted and when looking at the success of teams or defenses or even specific units (like D-lines) from the outside looking in, it is hard to really know how much of that credit or blame falls on the coach's shoulders. I would probably hire people I worked directly with as well. Seems to be less risk that way.

What would we do without that dominant running game we had last year?

    /sarcasm

Not sure why the sarcasm. Texans were 8th in the league last season in rushing yards per game (115.4) and 7th in the league in yards per carry (4.3). Dominant? No, I suppose it wasn't, but you're not going to have a truly dominant run game when your passing attack is at least as good. They were pretty well balanced. Hell, the team everyone thought of as having a DOMINANT rushing attack, the Tennessee Titans, had the same yards per carry as the Texans.

Did you actually watch any games this year?

Most of your Texans related posts seem like they are left over from 2005.

Like the Oakland game? Past two years we ran them into the ground. This year, we did not.

You're basing an appraisal of the running game on one game? Just one?

After you wake up and compare the running game from this year to that of '06 and '07, you will realize that there is no comparison. Not that this year's was so amazingly great--but that previously it was so amazingly bad.

How did that running game work out in the Red Zone?

It wasn't great in the redzone but I think that had to do more with the lack of having a power back. When Ahman was healthy, they were pretty good in the redzone. Gibbs has been here only one year and they made major strides this year. The Texans had really 3 new starting offensive lineman this year including a rookie. Considering that, I think the running game was great last year.

Not to mention a rookie RB (drafted in the 3rd round) who was originally supposed to be a project rushing for 1,282 yards and averaging 4.8 yards a carry.

But yeah, No Worries makes an excellent point. We lost to Oakland.

I can't find stats for red zone possessions, but the Texans were 7th in the league in rushing TDs. Slaton ran a couple in for long TDs that started beyond the 20 yard line, but I imagine most teams had at least one or two long TD runs. I think our biggest problem in the red zone was turnovers, and poor play calling.

That's eye-popping at first, until one remembers how rarely Detroit even *got* to the red zone!
