How did this guy get a $25 million guaranteed contract from the Texans? This guy seems to be an average DE to me. Anthony Weaver part two. Discuss.
He played quite well today, and is definitely better than anthony weaver. He played damn well during Arizona's Superbowl run. He is most definitely too highly pad, but he is gonna contribute
what is the point here, this was his best game of the season, if i were in control of banning this thread would have earned it for you, discuss that
Exactly. I thought it was going to be a positive thread before I clicked on it. I've been dissatisfied with his play but he showed up today.
Yea, you would have pages of resounding here-here's if this was any other week. To be fair to his haters, oakland's starting left guard has been out, but this is definitely his best showing, he closed off what looked like a sweep run to get us that safety. I noticed a few times that he was lined up as a DT, which was cool since it was suggested here.
C'mon Stoli . Its not the first C list free agent the Texans have gave a bad contract to and probably wont be the last (Weaver,Reeves,Orvlasky,Wade etc)
Definitely overpaid...but if he can contribute like he did today, I'll take as much as I can get. Weaver did nothing while here, nothing.
Funny how 1 good game gets you immunity to be crticized for playing horribly the 1st three. AND he is definitely overpaid.
It's called "market price". The Texans needed the DE help. Smith was one of the best on the market. This was the cost of bringing him in. He played well yesterday and will hopefully build on that.
Apologies for the negativity. Especially after the win. Yeah, it was bad timing. I'm an out of town Texans fan and got to watch the first half of the Oakland game. Admit I did not see the safety. Agreed, Smith is capable, but not a $25 million guaranteed DE. He's more a DT playing DE in my opinion. I'm generally underwhelmed. Agree that his signing this year was similar to the Reeves signing last year, we overpaid for need, but WE DID NOT GUARANTEE REEVES $25 MILLION! I think you should be a star in this league to get that kind of FA contract. It just seems to me that the funds would be better spent on players like DeMeco and Daniels who constasntly make plays, or their equal at the DE position.
i know you put in a smilie...but curious to know if you think it's true. and no i'm not baiting you into an argument.
Jaques Reeves was one of the last FA CBs available, he was not considered a coveted FA. Smith was among the best DEs available
I do not think Mario Williams is "overrated". MW is rated as one of the best pass rushing DEs and he plays like it. The Raider tackles probably think he is underrated, if anything.
Mario may have only 1 sack on the stat sheet from yesterdays game...but without a doubt, he was constantly rushing Russell to get rid of the ball. He was probably a split second away from putting up about 6 sacks. Mario is nasty.
One play I saw the RT, TE and RB shading over to triple team him. I remember being so pissed we still couldn't get pressure (on that play) but just marveling that they committed that much to Mario. Beastly.
Ya...we probably overpaid a little but Smith was one of the better FAs available last year. As far as his play so far this season, yesterday was BY FAR his best performance of the year. Not sure how much of that was due to a weak Raiders OL, but he played both the run and pass pretty well IMO. No sack but stood up his player on the safety and had a couple QB hurries from what I remember.
