I don't recall. But how close was the team to having the #7 pick last year? I do remember the debates at the end of the year about winning "meanningless" games and hurting draft position. Peterson looks like the REAL deal….
Peterson is the real deal, I don't think anyone ever doubted that. But a HEALTHY Peterson is legit, the hurt Peterson is the problem. So far he's been healthy, so he's been a stud. Gotta wait to see if he can make it through a whole season, not only this season but in the years to come. He hasn't been able to do it in the past, which hurt his stock.
The Texans had the 8th pick, but the point is moot since they swapped with ATL to get Schaub. Peterson was the guy I wanted but Okoye is a nice consolation prize especially since the Texans were rumored to want Ginn. Thank you Cam Cameron.
I think if we would have lost to the Colts last year we could have drafted Peterson. Even if we had the pick I don't know if we would have drafted a RB that high considering Denver never likes to pick them that high. Okoye is turning out to be a stud BTW so it's not that bad.
Ginn? Eh ... I would've given up all hope if they had picked him. I remember seeing him go to the Dolphins and I was like "what the hell are they thinking? this guy is an automatic bust."
The strength the Denver system has been the OL and the blocking scheme. Unfortunately, we know we need to address the line every year and it never really happens. We spend a draft pick and they get injured. We sign or trade for a player and they're a backup. The middle 3 or Pitts, Weary and McKinney (until he got injured) have been here since the beginning. Ephraim "The r****ded Rabbit" Salaam is a travesty at LT. If you put Peterson behind our OL, he's not going to do any better than Green or Dayne have done the past few weeks. It seems that the X factor was McKinney but he's out now.
I wouldn't go place him in the automatic bust category just yet but it was simply an incredibly stupid pick when they had the QB they DESPERATELY needed (B. Quinn) just sitting there and instead they go pick a kickoff returner/WR instead. That's the kind of Al Davis-like thinking that has virtually destroyed the Oakland/Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders.
Unless they believed Quinn was NOT the franchise QB he was hyped up to be. In that scenario, picking him at #9 and having to pay him tens of millions locks the franchise for the next 3 or 4 years at a minimum. Granted, they didn't have to pick Ginn, but I'm not so sure passing on Quinn wasn't the right move.
To be fair, Winston has been a solid starter for us and you couldn't predict that Spencer would have such a bad injury so early. Losing McKinney hurt a lot. It's really strange since run blocking was our strength last season and has now turned into our biggest weakness. Peterson is a stud and a great pick for the Vikes. With that said, Okoye has been awesome for us and should anchor our DL for years to come. At least we're not the Dolphins...I was literally laughing out loud when they picked up Ginn.
We'll just have to agree to disagree about Quinn but I'm sure we are in agreement that the picking of Ginn is so far shaping up as a major blunder on the part of the Dolphins.
I don't think there is anyway to look at this past draft as anything but a success to this point. Okoye is quickly becoming a stud. Jacoby is a huge surprise. Schaub is essentially our 2nd round pick. Bennett is getting good playing time at CB and should probably be starting over Faggins. Studdard is probably going to be active and get playing time for the first time this season. It would have been great to have Peterson, but I'm very happy with the way things turned out. This team is looking set for the next 5 years, only needing a few more pieces.
The last couple weeks has shown me we definitely need a left tackle. Can't afford to wait for Big Spence. If he comes back, great, plug him in at right guard or somewhere else. But we need a stud left tackle to protect the blind side and help us get the running game going. I would prioritize our needs as left tackle, defensive back, running back.......in that order.
Exactly. I don't think anyone ever questioned his skills. It was his propensity towards injury that made him a gamble. Ask the Chiefs what it's like to have a stud RB (Holmes) who never plays because he's injured. It has to be frustrating beyond measure. I wish AP the all the luck in the world, but would I want him on my Texans? I'd have to say "no".
Never plays? Other than Priest's last 2 seasons...he was an absolute workhorse for the first 6 years. I had major concerns over AP's injury history, but I also recognized that his last injury (broken collarbone) was more of a freak injury than anything else. Would I want AP on the Texans, Hell Ya...the guy is already a Top 3 back IMO. But we didn't have a chance at him and Okoye has been fantastic for us as well.
Yeah, it was a freak injury.. which to most people played more into "why can't this guy stay healthy??" It doesn't really matter why the guy is injured if he is sitting on the sidelines on a Saturday or Sunday, it just matters that he is and is not able to help his team.
I wish we had All Day, But Okoye hasn't been bad. SI had the top ten rookies in order so far this year and Peterson was #1 and Okoye was #2, not bad for a 20 year old kid.
You know it's thinking like this, that would make the Texans perennial losers. This just in, we now have a coaching and GM tandem that ACTUALLY know what they ARE doing! The Patriots rarely draft above # 20 yet, they find "hidden diamonds" as well as other teams in the last few years. I understand the deal with AD A.P. but, if Kuby would've tanked those games at the end, then you all would be accusing him of not maximizing his potential. So either way, he loses. This is point I have been trying to make. Everytime we say this player is can't miss or that player is can't miss what happens? Injuries, does not match expectations, poor work ethic, lack of desire, prima donna, etc. I believe A. Peterson is the genuine article but, in the long run wouldn't it be better to finish lower as a sign we are no longer a joke but, rather respectable on the verge of competing? Just a thought. I mean Peterson may get the numbers but at the end of the day will the Vikes go to the playoffs? Not likely. Need a D, need a QB, need a team. So ease up on the "meaningless" winning games perspective. Bottom line, Kuby needed to start to change the culture of this franchise, we're starting to see that. Yes, last week at J-Ville was a disappointment but, it's more a measuring stick of how much more development and improvement this franchise has to go sans the umpire gaffes and our own. Going to the playoffs for this team is a long shot. We have too many holes. Holes that don't get filled with just one player.
Don't get me wrong: I'm not bad-mouthing Holmes. He's an amazing RB, and worthy of heaps of praise (and seems to be a pretty decent guy, on top of that). My point was just that it's frustrating to have someone on your team who you know is capable of great things, but they can't play due to injury. Freak or not, injured is injured. If he ain't on the field producing, he's no good to the team, no matter how talented he is. True, but we're only 6 games into his career. I'm still skeptical about the long term. Which is a pretty darn nice silver lining to this cloud.
So by your standards, Derrick Thomas and Darrent Williams are two of the most injury prone players the league has ever seen. /sick joke I know
