http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_3524493 Word at the Pro Bowl was if Denver doesn't finalize a new deal for tackle Matt Lepsis, the Texans may make a run at him. Houston's interest would make sense. New coach Gary Kubiak coached Lepsis his entire NFL career in Denver and the Texans desperately need offensive linemen. Many believe the key to quarterback David Carr's improvement will be protection - something he has never had. Lepsis would be a great start. The former Colorado standout hails from Texas, so the attraction could be strong. Still, Denver will work hard to keep him. But if Lepsis hits the open market, don't be surprised if the Texans push hard for him.
Anything related to the words "pro-bowl" and "offensive lineman" and I'm all for it. I think we've all realized how imporant the line is...IMO the most important factor in being a good team. It controls the offense and can control the clock, allowing the defense to rest. I just hope Kubiak doesn't get stuck on bringing in former Broncos, kind of like another coach around here.
Cowboys thought the same thing with signing Marco Rivera last year and he ended up being a 5 mil season waste last year. Lepsis is a bit small and 32. Pro-bowls can go to older vets more by reputation rather than a guy still being at the top of their game. If Denver is ready to move on be carefull of overpaying. Not against the idea depending on cost, and Kubiak is in a good position to judge, but don't expect a 32 year older underzied OG to turn around your OL.
Just because he is better than what they have right now doesn't mean it is a good medium or long term move. That is money that could go to other FAs. It all depends on cost. Do you pay a guy 6 mil year with a 6+ mil signing bonus on the downside of his career? If Denver doesn't think he is worth the investment you have to be cautious. In general a younger, up and comer, without the pro bowl price tag would be wiser in most cases.
Does he have an injury history? Is he likely to break down? Because unless he's got a propensity to break down, I don't see how you can call 32 "old" for an OL. How long did Bruce Matthews play? Munchak? With some positions, like RB, 32 is old, while with others, like OL, a guy that age can have alot of good years left.
SC, not discouting that, but again if Denver doesn't think he is worth a big long term deal, proceed cautiously. Having Kubiak there helps.
Denver has the luxury of being able to bring in a new guy to integrate with their current line, which could make him more expendable. Houston doesn't have that option, if they want to improve their line they have to either draft a guy or pay more than another team is willing. I'm not saying you don't have a point but any free agent that we pick up will have been passed on by his current team for some reason.
Additionally, getting a young up and comer is probably much harder to find in todays NFL. If a team has a younger cheaper alternative, USUALLY the older guy is let go. Denver may be willing to part with Lepsis figuring it can pick up one of the OTs with one of their 2 first round picks.
if i were the texans, lecharles bentley is the guy i want. lepsis is still a good LT but he's heading towards the downside of his career. if bentley comes here, mckinney takes a paycut and get a decent tackle in the 2nd round. this will shape out imo LT PITTS LG MCKINNEY C BENTLEY RG WADE RT 2ND ROUND PICK (mcneil, winston, whitworth)
Dallas thought the same thing and signed the 32/33 year old 3 time Pro Bowl guard Marco Rivera thinking he would solidify the interior of the line and the right side. Not only did he not perform well individually, the line was even worse than last year. His five-year deal ($21 mil) deal will probably be ended after 1 year, with the Cowboys taking a major prorate cap hit on a $9 million signing bonus. Again, not against it, but proceed with caution and try not to have too large of a signing bonus that makes cutting your losses later much more painfull. Htown's call of Bentley is even better. That is a guy to grow with a younger core.
anyone is an improvement...If nothing else, the knowledge base of the blocking schemes will be great...
Well, Lepsis is off the market: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-broncos-lepsis&prov=ap&type=lgns
