Okay, I've done enough whining for the past few weeks. So time to look into the future.

    2013 Cap figure estimates in millions(from http://www.spotrac.com/)

    Schaub $10.7
    Joseph $9.75*
    Antonio Smith $9.8($3.8 bonus)*
    Foster $8.5
    Andre $10.4
    Daniels $5.25
    Manning $5.5
    Brown $5
    Myers $5.5
    Watt $2.5
    Mercilus $1.73
    Kareem $2.2
    Reed $1.3
    Tate $.84
Wade Smith cut for penalty of $.75

*Joseph and Smith are prime candidates for salary restructuring. Joseph due to his relatively low guaranteed money relative to base salary, and Smith due to last year of his contract. So it's possible the Texans can squeeze a little more money.

    est. 25 cheap players at ~600k/player, $15mil
est. 5 rookies making the roster at $5(based on last year's rookie salary pool)
    est. total players: 44

    Total salary: ~$97mil
    Cap space: ~$24mil

Notable UFAs: Casey, Cody, Butler, Quin, Barwin, McCain, Caldwell, Bradie James, Wade Smith

2014 notables: Duane Brown salary ++. Schaub salary ++. Antonio Smith comes off the books. JJ Watt still one year away from being franchised for the rest of his career.

My Comments: Our cap situation is actually quite good, IMO. All the dead money have mostly been written off. We have replacements for all our notable FAs, except maybe Quin and Casey. Although it's more due to our FAs not beasting rather than stud replacements on the roster.

I still feel that Smithiak give stupid contracts to players for peak production even when they didn't have to, but there's certainly enough room to make some splashes. Probably not Joseph/Manning level signings, but we can see certainly address some issues. Or make a huge splash on one particular position.

Personally I would be very interested in getting another top WR to the team as I feel that is our main concern on offense (I know QB situation and OL help, too)

Looked up some of the top guys:

    From: http://www2.footballsfuture.com/2013/fa/wr.html

    Others of note:
    Austin Collie
    Victor Cruz (Restricted)
    Ted Ginn Jr
    Devery Henderson
    Domenik Hixon

Personally I would go all in for Bowe or Amendola. Amendola would be a great reception guy that really converts first downs and opens up the field for Andre, TEs and Arian.

    Donnie Jones
    Shayne Graham
    James Casey
    Justin Forsett
    Ryan Harris
    Glover Quin
    Keyaron Fox
    Rashad Butler
    Jesse Nading
    Alan Ball
    Andrew Gardner
    Tim Dobbins
    Quintin Demps
    Bradie James
    Barrett Ruud
    Shaun Cody
    Stanford Routt
    Antoine Caldwell
    Brice McCain
    Connor Barwin

I'm not sure I would bring back any of our FA's. We need the cap room and it's not like any of these guys are play makers.

I think if you can sign Barwin cheap you do it....for depth and so you don't have to spend another draft pick at that position.

    I'd bring back Quin, too.

i used to think that too but have come to realize that giving schaub and kubiak weapons is useless. they already have more than enough weapons.

if you want to win a superbowl you either need an elite QB or an elite D. We have neither and QB is not upgradable to an elite level any time soon while D can be upgraded. so spend every penny on defense along with the draft to try and take a very good defense and make it elite. that's our only real chance in this window.
