OK- I didn't want to start the fire Charlie Casserly thread (too much draft dialogue) But when viewing this draft and discussing "are the Texans rebuilding?" I think the elephant sitting in the room is bright PINK and we all should take a look. Texans 2005 season stats All NFL teams- Last place in run defense 24th in pass defense Last place in scoring defense 25th turnovers/take aways 30th in passing offense 27th in scoring offense 27th in 3rd down conversions Our defensive front is bad as are the linebackers (I heard Casserly and others say our defensive line was a strength) Well let me tell you if you are last in the league against the run you are soft up the middle and you don't brag about your defensive line or your inside 'backers. If you are 24 in pass defense and scoring defense you don't get all worked up about your secondary or your pass rush. If your passing offense is 30th you stink. And if your 3rd down conversions are at 27th you are not putting many scoring drives together. The NFL is about playmakers more than schemes. Everyone who complains about the sorry offensive play selection and those who harp on the potential of the personnel just aren't getting the picture. The Texans lack many impact playmakers and that is why they are a 2-14 team. (By the way they definately overacheived in 2004 in I would give the credit to the coaching staff more than the talent of the roster.) What the statistics tell us is that we need a much stronger middle defense probably 2 defensive linemen and 2 linebackers. We need tighter pass coverage, at least one more good corner and one or both safeties must be upgraded. We definately need an impact edge pass rusher. On offense we need at least 2-3 offensive linemen to be decent. We need a tight end. We need another receiver and depth at receiver. Our QB needs to improve dramatically and DD must stay healthy and we need another good RB. (better than Morancy and Wells) I think the Texans are about 9-10 starters away from being a play off contender. Draft wisely Mr. Casserly, draft wisely.
Agreed. There are a lot of holes in that lineup, you do need impact players and not just talented players. This draft will probably make or break the next 3 seasons.
With Bush, Leinhert and Young sitting there in the draft you would think the #1 overall pick would bring a nice package this season. The GM's job is to get something like that done. I would love to have a #1 , #2, #4 this season plus a #2 and #3 next for that top pick. That deal could be done with a team that needs a QB badly
Good post, rhester. I hope this draft and upcoming FA goes well. It will look like Kubiak will have the majority decisions, so I have confidence he will pick the right players and hopefully Casserly's choices don't get in the way.
I would love to have Bush or Young, but if we can get draft picks and impact players for them, I would do it in a heartbeat. Crappy OL Crapp DL Other than AJ and Gaffney, crappy WRs Crappy LBs Crappy CBs I have confidence Kubiak will take us in the right direction.
I think having three impact players at the top of the board actually decreases the value of the #1 because you could still trade into the 2nd or 3rd pick and get one of these players. I think if you get that trade offer, you take it in a heartbeat. I don't think you will get that much and I'll be more than happy to "settle" for Bush.
Yes but it is amazing how many GM's do desperate things... what I am thinking is if a team gets really goo goo about one of those players they will sell the farm to get the #1 pick just to be sure. Yes, some will try to trade up to #2 or #3 to be sure they get a QB, but some teams may want one badly and not want to take a chance. If you really want Leinhert or Young you probably come to the conclusion it is worth going either for the 1 or 2 pick to be certain, and if you want one or the other bad enough you will feel the pressure to talk to the Texans. I don't know if any team would trade up for Bush unless he didn't go 1 or 2 and someone thought he was worth a package at 3. Why would you trade up for a Rb unless his name was Campbell?
The irony of Charlie Casserly, Dan Reeves and Bob McNair is that one side of their mouth says that David Carr just needs a lot more weapons and that this team just needs some impact players la de da, la de da, and the other side of their mouth says this team had the talent they just underperformed, they needed better coaching, they were a much better team than the record. Well then I guess we don't have so many holes to fill, don't be concerned about this draft with good coaching and another off-season mini-camp we are certainly bound for the playoffs. Texans stink Casserly put the roster together We need lots more weapons Carr will be great with better supporting cast We were probably a better team our first season than last season It just doesn't add up. I am hoping for a big turn around from Mr. Casserly. And if Kubiak is over the draft, well maybe we have a chance.
People arent going to trade up for Vince. Teams in "desparate need of a QB" dont need someone who admits to needing some seasoning. They need Leinhart.
My 2 cents: Charlie is a borderline figurehead. He won't be telling ANYBODY what to do except office staff members. Kubiak will solicit Casserly's opinion on what players to draft and what FAs to sign and Kubes will make the decision. It doesn't bother me that Casserly is still around because he welds no power over major decisions. He didn't hire Kubes and Kubes doesn't work for him.
Pretty amazing statistics. No pass rush and No pass protection. Can you imagine what practices were like last year? 1. Players line up 2. Carr says "hut hut" 3. Defensive line pops into offensive line and offensive line falls down. 4. Defensive line then falls down. 5. Carr goes into shock trying to figure out what 'stunt' the defense is in. 6. Carr drops the ball. 7. Dominick picks it up and runs right up the middle for 40 yards. 8. Buchanan misses the tackle. 9. Stretcher is sent out to pick up Gary Walker and take him off the field because he is injured from the contact. 10. Walker jaws at Carr while lying on the stretcher for dropping the football. 11. Capers tells everyone to calm down and maintain their "poise". This is a very important practice. 12. With the first down, the offense runs 3 straight plays. 13. First down, both lines fall down again and Dominick tweaks his hammy trying to dive over 9 players for the TD. He doesn't make it. 14. Second down, Pendry calls for a QB sneak. Carr gets called for illegal motion. That's allright, the defense has 12 guys on the field. Replay the down. Same play ran again, Carr trips over his shoelaces. Pendry jumps up and down on the sidelines and looks at the 48th page of his playsheets. Pendry calls a pass play. 15. Carr fades back. Bradford jukes Buchanan. Buchanan falls down. Carr throws a bullet. Bradford................................................yep, drops it. 16. Kris Brown lines up for the 17 yard gimme. Shanks it. 17. Whistle blows for end of practice. Players gather round. Capers tells them, "Good job, men. Maintain your poise." 2005 Texans - Thanks for the memories
Based on the comments of players on the Defense this past year from players like Dunta Robinson and others, they really hated the defense we were in and said that they have the personal for the most part to be a very effective team if they switch defenses. I would like to add some nice impact players on both side...nothing too crazy, but at the same time see how some of our past draft picks that were effective in college perform in a defense they are use to like Babin and Peek. I think they can really be effective give the right scheme and thank god we are finally switching over.
