I'll be heading there in a couple of weeks to visit, and I don't really have any plans yet. I was thinking about staying near the city center somplace like Shiodome, so we can be closer to the action. I'm just having trouble picking out a hotel. I think I'd like to check out some of the bigger temples, electronics market, as well as a Japanese Garden. Any advice on things to see, places to eat, nightlife, and where to stay would be greatly appreciated.
Unbelievably cool town, expensive though. All of the temples are really nice, most were pretty close to the city IIRC. I was there quite a while back but I remember walking around Shinjuku (sp?) at night and just being amazed at the lights and everything.
If you're into sneakers (limited edition Nike's, SBs, Visvim, etc), Tokyo is the best place to get 'em.
It's been a while for me and I don't remember specifics, but it is an AWESOME place. Hope you are going on business because it's the most expensive city I've ever been to, by far.
japanese people are weird. they like weird stuff. i had a run in with an old japanese lady. it creeped me out.
That movie was amazing. I've been to Tokyo once, about 10 years ago when I was still a kid. I remember it being so advanced compared to where I am from. I've read they have these bizarre fetish clubs. http://www.boingboing.net/2006/09/13/tokyos-fetishclubs-p.html. Not that anyone here would be interested in them.
seriously, why is Japan so weird in terms of p*rn? Why not have fairly ROUTINE p*rn? Where in the **** did this chick growing penis/demons raping everyone phenomena come from?
Dammit! You beat me to it. The OP needs to rent that to get a flavor of the city. I visited Tokyo many years ago and was struck at how on target that flick was. I stayed at a hotel very much like the one in the film. And the acting is incredible! What was he saying?
Right, so I'm probably going to be staying in Shinjuku. It's supposed to be away from the Financial District, so it should be pretty lively. Incidentally, for all the Lost in Translation quotes on here Shinjuku is home of the Park Hyatt -> the one featured in the film. Haha, it's not a business trip. Unfortunately, there's a hard freeze on travel at my company so this is on my own dime. Luckily the dollar has strengthened against the Yen since last summer.
If you get a chance, go to Nikko and the surrounding area. Amazing temples, stunning scenery... you won't forget it. The Toshogu Shrine, the Kegon Waterfall, Chuzenji Lake... trippy! Just a thought. That was a highlight of my trip to Japan. Took a very fast bullet train there! Shinkyo - the Sacred Bridge Chuzenji Lake Kegon Falls Detail from Toshogu Shrine, Nikko.
Admittedly so, but every culture has their strange fetishes etc. Yet, who the hell fantasizes about demon tentacles? lol.
"I have to be with you. Meet me in New York." Heh...not really. The loser in me wishes that. Actually, he really says, "I have to be leaving now, but I won't let that come between us, ok?" And she said, "Ok."
