The pill 'gives women a taste for boyish men like Zac Efron'

The contraceptive pill may be changing women's taste in men from the macho pin-ups of the 1960s like Sean Connery to today's more boyish stars like Johny Depp and Zac Efron, scientists believe.

Researchers have found that the pill changes the perception of what women find attractive – and therefore could alter their taste in men.

Experts at Sheffield University believe the effect could lead to a form of "unnatural selection" and to a reduction in genetic compatibility.

It is well established, that women's attractiveness to men and their perceptions of attractiveness fluctuate depending on where they are on their menstrual cycle.

Just before they ovulate they are more attractive to men, and also find more "manly" men attractive.

However the use of the pill effectively eliminates this cycle and therefore women always prefer the same men throughout the month.

That is they prefer more feminine and homely men – men that are closer to them genetically.

If the theory is correct, it could partly explain the difference in looks of today's heart-throbs such as Leonardo DiCaprio, compared to the more chiselled tough guys revered by women before the pill like Kirk Douglas.

The research also suggests that taking the pill after you start seeing someone could damage the long-term prospects of your relationship.

That could mean women going on the pill after they have met someone suddenly find them less irresistible.

The researchers say this could have a significant effect over large populations.

Dr Alexandra Alvergne, from the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield, said: "Altogether the use of the pill might have important consequences for the formation of couples, and subsequent marital relationship and reproduction, and thus have an effect over large population."

She added: "There are many obvious benefits of the Pill for women, but there is also the possibility that the Pill has psychological side-effects that we are only just discovering. We need further studies to find out what these are."

Her co-author at Sheffield, Dr Virpi Lumma, said: "The ultimate outstanding evolutionary question concerns whether the use of oral contraceptives when making mating decisions can have long-term consequences on the ability of couples to reproduce."

An increasing number of studies suggest that the pill is likely to have an impact on human mating decisions and subsequent reproduction.

"If this is the case, Pill use will have implications for both current and future generations, and we hope that our review will stimulate further research on this question."

The research was published in the journal Cell.

This would explain the recent barrage of hot thirtysomething teachers banging 8th grade boys.

Something tells me Mary Kay Letourneau was more of an RU486 gal.

I'd believe it. I hate hypermasculinity. Guys with really deep voices are unattractive.

I don't know any one of my friends who would say Vin Diesel or Channing Tatum is hotter than, say, Adam Brody or Zachary Levi.

Whatever that does to the genetic pool, I don't really givez a ****.

    ALL HAIL THE GLORIOUS PILL.

In the 1700s effeminate men wearing silk and wigs was attractive...wonder what pills they were on.

Social norms and conventions will always be more important in determining attractiveness since symbols of success change...but...

    Can't see the image, but I imagine I would be LoL'ing :)

The pill was more popular in the 70's. The research doesn't seem very scientific.
I think it has to do with the media more than anything else.

I don't believe this is true.

It may have been more talked about in the media, but I think the number of people being prescribed oral contraceptives is at an all time high.

Even with alternatives such as patch, injection, and implants?

From the standpoint of this article, there is no difference between those options and oral contraceptives.

Hmm, Maybe, the research is still flawed because it doesn't address the media aspect of it. It maybe that younger women have more disposable income these days the media is catering towards them. Hippies used the pill during the 70's but they prefer they're men grizzly. What about the 50's with a young Elvis, James Dean or Rick Nelsons? I'm more incline to think it's just the times.

On the flip side, how did sex symbols go from Loni Anderson and Sandi Lock to Beyonce and Megan Fox

I don't really know who Sandi Lock is, so I'm guessing that you are talking about trends towards less overwhelmingly curvy women? I've seen studies indicating that pharmaceuticals in public water have caused a drop in testosterone in men. Ditto for the reduction in manual labor jobs.

And it is also well established that serum testosterone levels bear a remarkably strong correlation in men to the buxomness of women that they find most arousing. So, more testosterone in your blood = aroused by Marilyn Monroe, less testosterone = aroused by Kate Moss.

Interesting, I could believe that. Chubby chasers are the result of something in the water. :) But I was actually referring to facial features. From blondes to brunettes, bony face structure and hair styles... etc.

I think Marilyn Monroe (or most "hot" women before the 20th century) is considered a little on the "heavy" side by today's standards.
