Wasn't even close, either. Don't worry, A-Rod will have another Silver Slugger award to fall back on... http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/1112/1459668.html
i'm shocked that Soriano got more 2nd place votes than Rodriguez! While I agree with the choice of Tejada, I think Rodriguez got shafted. That was one helluva season he had.
If I had to choose any player in baseball to NOT have on my team, it would be that mother****er Tejada. The A's will not win a game next season, mark my words. They will not win a game. Because Billy Beane is an ass muncher.
Tejada was money all year. His late game heroics the last week of the season were awesome. I think Tejada won over A Rod because the Rangers finished 30+ games in back of the A`s...not saying it`s right but thats my feeling. The MVP seems to go to a player on a winning team team the majority of the time.
Last week of the season? A-Rod didn't win this because most sportswriters follow the team MVP concept. In other terms, the best player on a team that did great that didn't have another stand out player helping them. Soriano and A-Rod deserved it over him.
how can you argue against this? the guy had the best season for a SS EVER!! and he doesn't get the award? that's a joke. the whole concept of the MVP is a joke...
I believe the word Valuable as a lot to do with it. There's no way a player on a ****ty team like the Rangers should win MVP.
why is he less valuable than tejada? because his teammates suck? so is the award for tejada or for his teammates? if they switched teams do you think the numbers would have been appreciably different? do you think tejada would have put up A-Rod's numbers if he wore a Rangers uniform? do you think A-Rod's numbers would have shrunk to Tejada's level if he played for the A's? just because your teammates suck doesn't mean you're any less valuable.
Yes. I think if you take Tejada off of the A's, they don't make the playoffs. I'm sure if you added ARod, Giambi, or any other superstar to them after that, they probably would, but that's beside the point. I will agree that the MVP in baseball is a joke since there are so many players. However, until they rename the award MOP, I'll always contend that the MVP should come from a competitive team.
i don't see how either one of those statements address the point...bottom line is that A-Rod was the best player in the AL this year...i think that's what the spirit of the MVP award is all about, technical definitions aside.
MVP - could stand for Most Value in the owners Pocket Tejada 308 BA 38 HR 131 RBI Salary $3 million A-Rod 300 BA 57 HR 142 RBI Salary $21 million
that's the problem with this award in all professional sports. it needs to be defined properly. is it based on your value to your team, to the league, or is it a player of the year award. since its a league MVP, i would think it means who is most valuable to the entire league. since Tejada was able to take over Giambi's enormous offensive role and take the A's to the playoffs, I think he's more valuable to the league. However, I'm sure ARod makes the league more money as a gate attraction. That's pretty damn valuable! Its all a question of definition. All pro sports leagues need to clarify this for the voters and the public. Than we won't have these arguments year after year where some people say its based on stats and others say its based on value...
