Hey, I have an HP laptop and this problem just started today, and it seemed to coincide with a little bit of an overheating problem. I talked to tech support, and while I seem to have corrected the overheating problem (updated BIOS, no idea how that would help, but it seems to.. and a bit of cleaning), there's this NEW problem where my system lags once every few seconds. It's a brief lag, but it's extremely noticeable while typing because in this time, I can usually get 1 or 2 characters out, and those don't appear at all, leading to plenty of typos and general annoyance. This is gonna be a b**** soon, once I have to start writing up term papers and stuff, since I have to go back and correct problems pretty much every time it occurs.

Anyone experience this before? The only advice tech support gave me was system maintenance advice, which I do pretty regularly anyway and did just incase, to no avail as the problem persists. I asked if it could be related to the overheating problem, since it seemed to coincide, but apparently not.

If anyone can help me out, I would be eternally grateful. Okay, not eternally, but for a couple weeks at least.

Open up Task Manager and see what process is spiking every few seconds.

When I read the thread title, the first thing I thought of was an overheating problem...which you still might have. One way to check is to boot into the BIOS settings and check the internal case temperature and CPU temperature (if the BIOS supports the reporting of these values...depends on the motherboard). The next thing I'd try (and this is definitely not for the hardware weary...especially on a laptop)...I would open the case and try reseating (unplugging and replugging in) any item that has a cable connecting it. With a laptop, this is probably limited to the harddrive. I would also remove the memory stick and plug it back in. Also...if you have multiple memory sticks, try removing one of them and booting up into Windows. If the problem disappears, you might have a bad memory stick or there is timing issues between the two sticks. Make sure you do this test on both memory sticks (if your laptop has multiple sticks).

    Good luck...hope this helps!
