http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-august-23-2010/the-parent-company-trap (I don't know how to post a video on the board but this is one of the funniest yet true things I have seen) so what do you guys think? Is FoxNews unimaginably stupid or just plain evil?
Evil. I think they bank on the fact that their audience is stupid, though... which makes them evil. I did see that last night and was amazed. The Daily Show constantly does this sort of thing though, but "legitimate" outlets don't bother with it because it's considered a comedy show and Jon Stewart is just a "funny man," thus rendering the show and his opinion irrelevant... even if it is more true and more impactful than anything the "legitimate" outlet could conjure.
The moment of zen was pretty funny (and damning) too: <table style='font:11px arial; color:#333; background-color:#f5f5f5' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='360' height='353'><tbody><tr style='background-color:#e5e5e5' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com'>The Daily Show With Jon Stewart</a></td><td style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; text-align:right; font-weight:bold;'>Mon - Thurs 11p / 10c</td></tr><tr style='height:14px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;' colspan='2'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-august-23-2010/moment-of-zen---prince-alwaleed-bin-talal-on-fox-news'>Moment of Zen - Prince Alwaleed bin Talal on Fox News</a></td></tr><tr style='height:14px; background-color:#353535' valign='middle'><td colspan='2' style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; width:360px; overflow:hidden; text-align:right'><a target='_blank' style='color:#96deff; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/'>www.thedailyshow.com</a></td></tr><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><embed style='display:block' src='http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:item:comedycentral.com:351497' width='360' height='301' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='window' allowFullscreen='true' flashvars='autoPlay=false' allowscriptaccess='always' allownetworking='all' bgcolor='#000000'></embed></td></tr><tr style='height:18px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><table style='margin:0px; text-align:center' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='100%' height='100%'><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/'>Daily Show Full Episodes</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.indecisionforever.com/'>Political Humor</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/videos/tag/Tea+Party'>Tea Party</a></td></tr></table></td></tr></tbody></table> I'll have to go with Team Evil.
Both my kids watch every broadcast of Daily, and they get it, thank god. Sure, they usually DVR the thing and watch the next afternoon, but they watch it. I consider The Daily Show the best news source on television, and I'm not kidding. The best. If you have a sense of humor and follow the satire, you get the real news, not the biased bull****, or the pablum dumbed down for the masses. It should be required viewing for everyone with a modicum of intelligence. Everyone else can go to hell. (an FYI... I'm not in a very good mood, although we won our trivia contest tonight)
I agree that the Daily Show is probably the best news show on television. However, I think that says more about the "real" news shows than it does about the Daily Show.
They cannot be that stupid, they act like they are stupid every now and then, but that is mostly to show how little they care about a subject (or foreign country/culture) Furthermore, they have showed that they have no problem twisting (changing) the truth in order to make a point (make people scared). But this was really one of the dummest things they have said so far.
I completely agree. It is sort of bizarre though, that a comedy show is the best news source of television. I wish it was longer than half an hour, though, and had fewer interviews with random celebrities. In other words, heavier on the news (or satire of the news) and humor/opinion about the news. I remember someone here posted a poll on how informed a person was relative to what news source they used and #1 was those who watch The Daily Show. I was actually unsurprised. I'd find the poll, but the search function appears to be running out of memory...
Agreed. And I think this was the poll in question: http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?ReportID=319 The Daily Show has, for quite some time now, portrayed the most accurate depiction of the political and media-driven landscape. I think there are a few reasons for this: 1. They aren't afraid to make fun of anyone. True, they take more shots at Faux News (by the way, I'll go with Team Evil) than CNN or MSNBC, but they take plenty of shots at those guys, too. They will criticize guys like McCain, O'Reilly, and Bill Kristol and then ask them to be guests on the show to talk about it. They'll depict Obama as a Messianic figure one day and rip him to shreds the next. They are an equal opportunity offender. 2. They have the BEST research team on television. Many are the times that some figure, either from the left or right, will make a statement and, within hours, the Daily Show is airing footage of that figure saying the exact opposite. In one of my favorite moments, they actually reached back to the friggin' Nixon administration and managed to eviscerate eight Presidents simultaneously: <table style='font:11px arial; color:#333; background-color:#f5f5f5' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='360' height='353'><tbody><tr style='background-color:#e5e5e5' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com'>The Daily Show With Jon Stewart</a></td><td style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; text-align:right; font-weight:bold;'>Mon - Thurs 11p / 10c</td></tr><tr style='height:14px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;' colspan='2'<a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-june-16-2010/an-energy-independent-future'>An Energy-Independent Future<a></td></tr><tr style='height:14px; background-color:#353535' valign='middle'><td colspan='2' style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; width:360px; overflow:hidden; text-align:right'><a target='_blank' style='color:#96deff; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/'>www.thedailyshow.com</a></td></tr><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><embed style='display:block' src='http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:item:comedycentral.com:312470' width='360' height='301' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='window' allowFullscreen='true' flashvars='autoPlay=false' allowscriptaccess='always' allownetworking='all' bgcolor='#000000'></embed></td></tr><tr style='height:18px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><table style='margin:0px; text-align:center' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='100%' height='100%'><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/'>Daily Show Full Episodes</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.indecisionforever.com/'>Political Humor</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/videos/tag/Tea+Party'>Tea Party</a></td></tr></table></td></tr></tbody></table> 3. Jon Stewart is an outstanding interviewer. He is able to speak intelligently, yet with good humor, about a WIDE variety of topics with people he both agrees and disagrees with. I've seen him politely and deftly talk contentious guests into a corner, almost without them realizing it. His interviews lately have been somewhat lacking, but I chalk that up more to the quality of guests than his interview skills. It's really no wonder that, according to a Time magazine poll, he's the most trusted name in news: http://www.timepolls.com/hppolls/archive/poll_results_417.html
Fox ain't stupid, it executes a fairly successful, calculated propaganda campaign designed to keep the top 5% in the black while making a profit off the bottom 95%. Really that's pure genius. And it's not really evil, it's just the way politics has been played since ancient Greece.
