Another racist tea party candidate? No surprise here. Rich Iott, Tea Party candidate for the House, 2nd from right. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics...-gop-house-candidate-dressed-as-a-nazi/64319/ Excerpts from the full story on The Atlantic.
I don't really want to defend the guy, but according to him he's participated in many World War I/II reenactments over the years and has played guys from both sides of both wars.
Correct. As if playing a Nazi in a WWII re-enactment is bad. If that is the case, then I can think of a few Hollywood actors who are guilty.
Yeah, I would agree with the history prof that the guys probably have their facts all wrong, but having seen the re-enactments, you have to have both sides covered. I guess the reenactments in Germany are pretty surreal, with one side missing. Anyway, I would say "non story."
Uh. You guys sure are being easy on him. Think Globetrotters/Generals. In Hollywood the Nazi's are always the Generals. This quote seems to portray that this guy thought the Nazi's were the Globetrotters. If that is true, that is a BIG problem. If he's got nothing to be ashamed of, why is he covering it by removing all references on the Wiking site? Sounds like a little more than just a re-enactment to me. If so, you seriously think it's cool to have a Nazi sympathizer in our government. Really?
What is the point of those re-enactments? Sounds like little boys playing cowboys and indians . I don't know if this is any indication that he identifies with Nazis (I doubt it), but it seems to reflect somewhat negatively on his maturity level, maybe?
I guess that anybody that has participated in Civil War re-enactments should not run for Congress either.
Too much rushing to judgement on this one. While it's fair game by his opponents, this is more cable news material than anything of real political value.
Based on what I read in the story and have heard elsewhere, these guys are not WWII historians who re-enact battles. They are specifically fascinated and seem to be in awe of the Nazi soldiers. They even talk on their website about all the qualities of the SS that they admire. This isn't a "non-story" unless you think romanticizing one of the cruelest groups of people to walk the planet isn't a problem for someone running for an elected office. I wonder how people would feel if these guys dressed up in the Klan robes and re-enacted lynchings but said on their website "we don't condone everything the KKK did but they did some good stuff too and we admire that."
From the story linked: "Iott participated in the group under his own name, and also under the alias "Reinhard Pferdmann," which has also been removed, and which Iott described as being his German alter ego."
This is the part of your post that is a little scary. Were these valid sources or some guy's blog from his mother's basement?
Can you link to any of this proof? Their website describes themselves as this : Sounds like they are actors just like every other actor who has portrayed a Nazi. If you can explain what makes this guy different then any other actor who has portrayed a Nazi then you might have a case.
It was my cousin from my aunt's garage apartment. You don't find it troubling that this group says of the Wiking Nazis it portrays: they were“volunteers who came from the various Northern European countries allied with Hitler’s Germany who only had a desire to see an end to Soviet Communism.” or "we salute their courage and loyalty to put their lives on the line in defense of their native soil, no matter what nationality or government.” Furthermore, do you or anyone you know enjoy playing the roles of some of the most digusting people in history? Do you ever want to get together with your pals and re-enact lynchings while you dress in Klan robes just for fun? I doubt you do because we tend not to want to emulate or recreate things unless we find admirable qualities in those people or the actions they committed. Seriously, this throws me for a loop that some of you guys read this **** and think this guy just wanted to bond with his son by playing army.
They straight up say all they do is portray a specific group of Nazi soldiers. Read the website, they can't say enough about how great these dudes were (except for the Jew killing part, of course). It is r****ded to compare these guys to actors who make a living telling a story. Your comparison might hold water if you can find an actor who refuses to play any role where he isn't a Nazi.
Yes, that disclaimer sure convinced me. Are you an actor? Is Iott? Did he do this to feed his family? The guy played "war" as a Nazi, took his son to do the same and even took on a Nazi alter-ego and fake name. Yep, he doesn't admire anything about these guys he chose to spend his weekends pretending to be (for free).
