Oh please 10 is the new 9. 10 wins seasons don't mean the same thing since the addition of an extra game against patsys + conferenece chanpionship + bowl game. Ten win seasons have lost thier luster. It's all about 11 know. If you think starting upperclassman instead of more talented underclassman is trivial I'd like to see how you feel when Palmer and Foster cost us a few games. Those two wouldn't be starting for Ark. St.
The Big 12 hasn't been an elite conference in awhile, and before the last couple of seasons Texas hasn't really challenged a non conference team. Its hard to knack on accomplishments and faults since I said if it wasn't for VY he would be elsewhere. For having the most wins in the so many years, he has one National Championship and 2 BCS appearances again thanks to VY. He has only won the Big 12 championship once, only beaten Oklahoma twice I believe. His team barely hung on to beat Iowa in last years bowl. One thing he did have for his claim, previous to last year he has always owned A&M and Tech. And for getting the top recruits for so many years, he should have more success. Again I am looking to seeing if he accomplish great things without VY. If he can I will be more than willing to eat crow at end of the year. Expectations maybe too high but that comes with the territory when recruiting the top 3 year in and year out.
Last I checked they weren't "jazzed up" from the win over Baylor. They are more than likely pumped to get the chance to play UT. Oh yeah....and they might be "jazzed up" because they are 5-0 against BIG12 in their last 5 games.
As said earlier, TCU is known for its defense...not offense. One example of some punishing D is this clip from the game against TexTech. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uj7gUZb_Zcs"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uj7gUZb_Zcs" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
In terms of recruiting, Mack has done a stellar job, but this is not a well coached team this year by any stretch of the imagination: 1. Poor LB Play: Bobino, Muck, Killebrew, Derry were all virtually non-existent this year and last. They haven't made a damn bit of impact, take horrible pursuit angles, and rarely make plays, thus putting the DBs at risk. 2. Running Game Issues: the running game woes go back to last year, as the longest run of the day was 15 yards by Jamaal, leading to a 4.1 ypc average. GD continues to run the one-back zone read offense despite not having a running threat at QB. It ocmes down to not recognizing that VY is no longer at Texas, and the scheme is a poor fit given our drop-back passer. 3. Secondary: this trend of giving up 10 yard cushions and allowing teams to pass all over us started last year, and even with 9 months to prepare, has yet to improve. KSU dropped 43 points on us last year. Ark State threw the ball at will for 26 first downs. Foster and Palmer looked completely out of place, and didn't belong on the field. 4. Offensive Creativity: watching take the handoff in the shotgun, dance around and get pummeled after a 1-yard gain is not an offense. Neither is getting stuffed 4 times on 1st and goal from the 3. We've had almost a whole year to fix last year's problems, and instead we come out looking even worse.
I don't know how many more times I can say it. No one has more wins than Mack in the last 10 years. He is tied (with 10 other teams) for 2nd in National Championships. He is 4-5 against OU which is not stellar but OU is a team that for a few years was one of the best in college football. In 3 of their 5 wins, they went to the National Championship game, winning once. 11 is the new 10? What? Even looking at it that way, Texas has finished with 11 or more wins 4 times in the last 10 years. It doesn't really matter what the benchmark is because In relation to all the other Division 1 teams, they have the most wins. Fine, if you don't accept it as a trivial detail. You can find nuances like that in every program if you look hard enough which I assure you, you are. I've said all I can say. If you guys don't buy it than oh well. I think the evidence is right there. It's amazing that an "off" year for texas was a 10 win season with a redshirt freshman QB at the helm.
sorry dude, but the whole mack cant win w/o vy arguement is stupid, old and recycled by sooners, aggies, and whoever else in an attempt to detract from ut's success. great players will always make great coaches/teams -- thats how it always was, is, and ever will be. ive seen this thread all too many times. so let me just save us a few pages. -aggies like to squeeze their own nuts -greg davis is a horrible playcaller -lubbock has no trees -ou sucks
UT has been burned before on return games, UH showed zero class during the whole "bleachergate game" and now the Coogs don't ever get to play Texas again as they will continue to play Rice. As far as this game goes, UT has some major question marks but I don't see them losing to TCU at home but it should be intresting as it is a high stakes game.
What is the "Bleachergate Game" and what happened? I tried a Google search but turned up nothing significant.
bleachergate was the 2001 game between UH and UT that was played at Robinson on the UH campus. It was the middle game of a home away home for UT and a away home away for UH. This game was supposed to be played in the dome but during talks the then UH AD Chet Gladchuck(sp) convinced Dodds (UT AD) to play the game at UH if they built out 4,000 temp bleachers to be sold to UT fans. Well, the bleachers were constructed on a hill that summer behind one of the endzones, they were not cemented down or even bolted down. They were instead put on 2 X 2 plywood and they would sway in the wind with nobody on them. UH knew they were not up to code weeks before the game and instead of changing venues they did not say anything till the week of the game. Well when 4,000 UT fans were "out of luck" UH officials told them they could watch the game inside of the basketball arena lol. Long story short, UT finished their commitment by playing the next year in Austin but I can's see a senario in which these teams will play again after UH screwed over UT. Bottom line they should of moved the game to the dome weeks before when those bleachers were clearly not safe.
EDIT: Nevermind. See post above. Well, since this post counts towards my total, I guess I have to say something... Uh..... Sam Houston State football rules!!!!!!
Anyone who's watched us play knows that these problems have plagued us since last season. Look at the KSU, ATM, Iowa, and ASU games.
This should be the biggest concern right now - not that we've struggled against ASU, but that we've had 4 straight very questionable games at best and are 2-2 in the last 4. Different team and all, but the team last Saturday looked a lot like the team that ended last season.
Ya...our problems are clearly evident and I have no idea why we still saw them last week. Our biggest problem right now is the running game or lack of. THE ZONE-READ DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE!! It is by-far the most aggravating thing IMO. 1. As far as the LB play, I think you'll definitely see more of Norton and Muck over Derry and Killabrew. Hopefully Kindle's return will help us out as well. 2. As I posted, the zone-read and counter play out of shotgun worked wonders with VY. W/o him...it is just open season for 1-yard losses because DE and LBs will ALWAYS stay home. 3. I'm not exactly sure why are secondary has been struggling (even last year w/ Ross, Griffin, Brown). We are a little inexperienced this season but in no way our we suppose to give up 300 yards passing to Ark St. 4. I'm hoping we'll see some more creativity this week. GD talked over the summer about changing the running schemes and such but we didn't see it on Saturday. I'm HOPING they didn't want to give anything away.
As a graduate of the University of Texas, with a TCU-graduate mother-in-law, I can honestly say I'm scared sch!ttless of this game. Seriously.
I was at the UT game this last Saturday. If they don't improve their pass rush and most importantly pass defense (secondary sucks), they will get burned by TCU and OU for that matter.
From SI.com Cory McCartney>All-Out-Blitz Crystal Ball TCU at Texas SEPTEMBER 8 Was Texas looking ahead to TCU or is the defense really that bad? It may be that bad. The secondary gave up too many big plays vs. Arkansas St., and the normally stalwart run D is missing its edge. Aaron Brown and TCU will be thinking BCS bowl after this one. TCU 24, Texas 20
