Hello folks, I need to ask for tAx advice again. First of all, Im a young single male, with a full time job working 55 hours a week and really dont have time to mess with this stuff. I rent my home, I have a serious girlfriend, no kids. Im wondering if "H&R Block" can help me get a bigger return as advertised. I dont really think I have anything to claim. I usually use the 1040EZ Teletax form, but they have discontinued Teletax, and are trying to force people to file online. Ive never filed online, but tried last year, and it said I owed a hefty sum, so I did not hit "submit". But when I went and did Teletax, I got my usual return. So since Im caught between filing methods, and extrememly busy with work, I was thinking of going to a Tax Service. Is it worth it??? Thanks!
Your refund is what your refund is....if you get different results between online filing, the Teletax form or 1040/1040EZ then you are just doing something wrong on one of them. Sounds like you only have your W-2, you get the standard deduction and your personal expmption. You should be able to do it any of the ways listed above and get the same result. If you can do the Teletax that way would likely be the easiest. BTW H & R Block can't get you back any more money then you can by doing the forms yourself...the ONLY thing they can do is make sure they are filled out correctly. That and give you a rip off loan for your refund.
I assume that since you have been able to use tele-tax in the past that your tax situation is not complex. Do you have any income other than your job and perhaps some bank interest on savings/checking accounts (e.g. dividends/capital gains from investments)? Are you able to itemize deductions (probably not since you don't have mortgage interest and probably no property taxes). I cannot see any advantage in going to a tax service if you can essentially file a 1040EZ.
screw H&R Block. if you've been filing a 1040EZ, i presume your tax returns aren't too difficult. contact one of these libraries that is closest to you: http://www.hcpl.net/branchinfo/branin.htm they have AARP volunteers come out and do returns for free. i work for HCPL and have always gone to them.
Yea last year i tried Snap Tax Online. I think it was made by TUrbo Tax, but only holds the 1040EZ form. Apparently I was doing something wrong, but I couldnt figure out what. No I dont have any other income. I dunno what Im going to do.
Go to the IRS web site. Download the 1040EZ form and instructions. Fill it out. Put it in an envelope and mail it in. Why is this causing you so much consternation? The form is extremely simple to fill out.
I did that and im getting back about 1400. I need my money fast though. Im about to purchase a car. Is it faster if i go the online route? I can find any free online software.
H&R Block is only able get you more money if they are able to find more deductions / adjustments...but like said above if you aren't in a complicated tax situation then they can't find anything. I just efiled, alot of sites efile the federal form for FREE... http://www.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp Peronally I used.. http://www.hrblock.com/taxes/partner/index.jsp?otpPartnerId=180 Not sure of any sites that eFile the state return for free.... The eFile route is said to be faster because you don't have the IRS item processing wait... By the way $600 coming back
Have you looked into this site? https://www.taxactonline.com/s_online_tax2005/introduction/intro_index.asp I use TaxCut from H&R Block. It cost me $19.99 at Target and includes a free Federal e-file as well as the state program (in my case, Minnesota). The free Federal e-file requires a rebate, but I have never had a problem with them. I have found that you get things back very quickly when you e-file AND have direct deposit. The past 3 years my State refund has been direct deposited one week! after I filed and the federal generally follows a week or two later.
Here's a tax question: When you donate clothes to charity, how does that work come tax time? I mean, how much is it worth and how do you figure that out?
There is actually a program from H&R Block called Deduction Pro that gives you a fair idea as to what to claim (I think it is included for free in this year's edition of TaxCut). If you want to be real accurate, take a trip to the Goodwill store and see how much similar items are going for.
The charity is supposed to give you a charitable donation receipt with the estimated value of the items donated clearly printed. This usually an agreed upon amount between donor and charity. Also, I beleive you have to break the minimum deduction threshhold to even use this type of deduction.
Places like Goodwill, Purple Heart, and others normally give you a blank receipt (other than the date) when you donate a bag of clothes or goods.
