lets make this simple and fast, I know most of you guys are going to enjoy it but here I go again. got back 8k + on my tax (what i filed for) only received back 5k +... was unemployed last year for a couple of months, owed money on child support, they took that money and gave it to my baby mama I hate my baby mama!!!
How much money and time does it cost/take if I take my stubs and paperwork into HR Block? I'm just average, no business owner. Job, house, kid, that's it. Pleasedon't tell me about turbotax, etc. I know, that's not my question. thanks
Yeah, how dare they take money for your kid???? You could have used that $3k on partying and maybe you could have ended up with another one!
Don't bother... just do the free version on the irs website.. with only those things to claim you should be able to file in about fifteen minutes.
Hard to say since I don't work there. Try doing them yourself online first to see how that goes and then, if necessary, make an appointment to meet with an H&R Block guy.
H&R block claims their average return cost $190. Their business is dropping off quick though since the do it yourself programs are that good, so unless you're really scared of computers or numbers, or want the expensive cash-back option, it's worth giving it a go yourself first, I think. I think a very simple return is $100-$150. They charge upwards of $700 for simple ones with cross border stuff .
thanks bnb, my problem is : last year I did it online and for the first time we owed. Owed over $1000, that was the year we bought a house (pre-stimulis thing/ I'm no eligible for) It's me, my wife, 1 kid, 2 jobs, student loan interst, daycare cost and a new home = I paid over $1000. Everyone says that shouldn't have happened, but it did. This year it's showing the same thing (online) so I wanted to have a human look at it. Could it be that we are not having enough withheld? or that my wife has just returned to work w/in the last 2 years? I mean we are not rich, she's a teacher, me at a non-profit. thanks for any info
Are you able to file a Schedule A and itemize? If so, I assume you have home interest as well as property taxes to deduct. How many dependents are you claiming? I assume you are claiming married and 3 (you, your wife and your child) and your wife is claiming none. Any charitable contributions?
dang I remember last year I owed about 9k cause I was working on a 1099 then I claimed a bunch of random bs and brought that sucker down to about 3k, WIN! woot woot This year I got 8k + extra cause of FTHO ya yay ay but stupid baby mama gets 3k =(
Most likely you didn't withhold enough. There are plenty of withholding calculators online to show you how much you should withhold so that you don't owe anything at the end of the tax year. You should run one of them and tell your HR to change your withholding so you don't run into the same issue next year. The DIY software programs are usually good at asking you questions to make sure you aren't missing out on any deductions or credits. If you didn't file a Schedule A then most likely your standard deduction was higher than your itemized amount. For 2009 tax year I believe you can deduct property taxes without itemizing if your standard deduction is higher than your itemized deductions. Also remember the making work pay credit. It should yield you a few hundred dollars up to $400. You would get the best advice from a CPA, but just make sure its a good CPA. Ask around.
