After hearing a few of the catchy tunes like "Not gonna get us" and "In my head" I went out and got that CD I decided that after they had a few cool pre-party songs, i saw them both making out at a concert, and coupled with the fact that they are both sexy little russians with nice accents. Call me a slave to the industry, a fool who bought into an act. But I like em!! Maybe my girl will get the hint and meet a little friend with a sexy accent for some o' that. The number 5 song is a re-do of an old bad ass 80's song and they have a few songs in Russian too. Two Khan Thumbs Waaay Up!
i accidentally downloaded the song "In my head" on Kazaa and really liked it. Bought their CD eek: is that the music business actually benefitting from "illegal" downloading??????? surely not)
Exactly. They are lesbians on stage only. On the other hand, it worked so well that Britney and Madonna might try it, as desperate as they're getting for attention.
Forgive me cuz I'll never admit to liking their music but the one time I did see them on the tele they were wearing wife beaters and they were bouncing around on stage and it was fun to watch them.
I cant belive there is a thread about a band that has come and gone already, and I even forgot who they were except for this thread. this thread should have been around 9 months ago. it was a great marketing ploy though. bi Curious russian school girls. reminds me of Stony Brook University days
I want to get the Kelly Clarkson album. Her first two singles "Miss Independent" and "Low" are pretty good. Of course I'd rather download them, but I'm scared of using Kazaa.
Sigh. Those were the days. Though I'm too young to remember them, apparently; the rest of my generation grew up with MTV. My parents didn't want me watching MTV, so my exposure to videos was pretty limited for a while.... then, when I did see them, I'd drive myself crazy trying to figure out what everything meant. I would think, "That's not how I interpreted the song". It took Beavis and Butt-head to make me realize that the videos weren't necessarily symbolic of anything. But I'm a musician, so that will always come first; I would usually hear it before I "saw" it, and was disappointed by how sleazy the artists looked in real life. (sorry, kind of off topic but very interesting to think about)
In truth, the visual image has ALWAYS been important. It has just never been mass marketed like it is now. Remember that the biggest selling records on the pop charts even into the early 70's were people like Paul Anka and Fabian. "You Light Up My Life" was one of the biggest selling records of the 1970's. Even in the mid and late 70's, disco, dominated by sequins and flashy costumes, was the dominant music on the charts. It just took MTV and cable television to make it visible to us on a 24-hour-per-day basis.
perhaps that's true. i'm just thinking of people like billie holliday...it didn't matter what she looked like. people loved her voice..her music. funny story...back in the early 90's C&C Music Factory (yeah...i said it!) had a tremendous vocalist over their music...a woman. they chose not to use her in the video, though. they hired some model to lip sync as if she was the actual singer of the song for the band. the actual singer sued...i don't know whatever happened with that. but it wasn't good enough that the woman could freaking belt it out...they didn't want her associated with the "visual representation of the song" on MTV. what a joke. the same is true of country music today...do you think it's any coincidence that the hottest acts in country music are some of the hottest women in the world? (faith hill and shania twain come to mind). geez...just play the freaking song.
The 'style over substance' genre of pop music has been around since the 50's. The only difference is now these frauds are actually being taken seriously as artists. That's the part that makes me want to stick it in, twist it, and break it off. Have you seen the Grammy's lately? Didn't Milli Vanilli teach us anything?!?!?
I guess my 'man card' is on the line too. I thought 'In my head' was a pretty good tune. Mindless. But better than much of the tripe on the dial. The flip side of a too-cute marketing image is that it can serve define and limit you as well. IF TATU were a grungy, flannel wearing band, would their music (the same music they're doing today) appeal to a different group? It's probably true they wouldn't have had the same exposure early on...But we wouldn't automatically dismiss them as a side-show. Madonna was one of the few who was able to take a 'gimmick' image and keep evolving to remain on top for 20 years or so. I thought 'in my head' sounded kind of Cranberries-like. I was listening to hear the artist the first time I noticed the song. Somewhat disappointed it was TATU. I didn't really want buy in to that over hyped. MTV fueled, mass-marketed trash. Not that I have anything against cute pseudo-lesbian Russian schoolgirls making out on stage.
