http://www.la.indymedia.org/news/2004/11/118865.php LOS ANGELES, November 9, 2004 - At 7:50 PM two armored tanks showed up at an anti-war protest in front of the federal building in Westwood. The tanks circled the block twice, the second time parking themselves in the street and directly in front of the area where most of the protesters were gathered. Enraged, some of the people attempted to block the tanks, but police quickly cleared the street. The people continued to protest the presence of the tanks, but about ten minutes the tanks drove off. It is unclear as to why the tanks were deployed to this location. Uploaded here is video from the event. http://la.indymedia.org/uploads/tanks-on-la-streets.mov The military has said that the tanks just happened to be in the area and got stuck at a red-light I'm willing to buy that story, as it is Veteren's Day - maybe there were in the area getting ready for a parade - but why would the tank drivers come even close to protestors at 8pm? It does seem fishy
"But if you looked at the steets, it wasn't about Rodney King, it was about this f-ed up situation and these f-ed up beliefs..." Sublime
Totally agree. I just remember it like it was yesterday. Looking out the window of my 12th story office and counting the fires. Curfews from dusk till dawn. National guard soldiers lining Venice Beach with rifles loaded and holding them chest high. It was surreal.
what are you talking about, bush just said that when we democratize iraq, it will cause a crushing blow on the terrorists and they will run off scared like neutered puppies. Freedom is the only way! yeah! now excuse me while I go put a bigger flag on my SUV.
yeah i go to school at ucla right by the federal building there. I heard about the tanks and considering the traffic generated on wilshire blvd between veteran ave and sepulveda blvd (where the federal building is located) its no surprise that the tank got caught at a red light. There are protestors there every single day it seems and causes traffic to become more of a crawl.
That isn't a tank, it is a light armored vehicle. The smaller cannon (25mm) and the wheels are a dead giveaway. It seems like these folks don't even have an understanding of what exactly it is they are protesting against.
