HEY PEEPZ ME WANTZ HE1P 2 GO 2 SKOOLZ AND PWN EVERY1 IN MY QL PWNAGE NOOBZ.. no, just kidding.. So I got my acceptance letter from A&M only 10 days after applying (and I applied pretty late compared to others) and it was the best feeling I've had in a very long while. The whole envelope thing with "congrats, you've been accepted" was absolutely great.. ANYWAY, the next day, I got a scholarship offer for $20k in 4 years (5K a year) to A&M as well, and it felt better than the day right before it! it was just a great sequence for me and I am absolutely on a roll ANYWAY, so without getting all weird about it and describing the "feelings" further, here is the burning question: what kind of dorm room should I choose? there are a bunch of different kinds of rooms with varying prices, and I kinda get the uniqueness of each one of them, but I need someone with 1st hand experience LIVING in the TAMU dorm (Rocketmanjosh? uprising?) to give me some advice.. I also wonder if anyone here knows about the "honors" dorm, is it better (more quite, better learning environment) or is it worse (bunch of weird geeks, no fun boring environment).. I will qualify for the honors program based on my SAT score (which came out to be 2040, with a 270 points improvement from last time!!!) and my class rank (which hopefully will stay the same after the finals coming up).. just for the record, I applied to UH, UT, and Rice, and none of these schools sent me ANYTHING yet.. heck, UH sent me the "confirmation" email like 2 weeks after I applied. but I am still weighing my options in terms of scholarship money/convenient strategic locations..
No matter which one you choose, as an incoming freshman you have a great chance at just getting assigned one. That being said, I lived in Crocker, one of the older style dorms (yet it had air conditioning). I think because of the way it was set up, I got out and met more people and had more fun than I would have in one of the nicer suite style dorms. Just shoot for air conditioning.
Wow, congrats. You are about to start the greatest years of your life. Enjoy them because they will be over before you know it. BTW, don't listen to all the longhorn fans who are about to start busting on you in this thread....
LOL, actually, I might join your Saturday bball games soon to get an idea of how the rec center looks like (isn't that where y'all play?) .. it would be really nice if a fellow clutchfan would show me around campus some day as well.. man, do I wanna go to a clutchfans pickup bball game, except I work on Saturdays and I don't get off until 4. and since my work is in the I-10 & Gessner/Bunker Hill area (near memorial city mall), it's kind of a long drive for me and y'all will probably be done by the time I get there
Get a room at the main quad, I lived in Aston hall for 2 years, think you'll enjoy the enviroment and now you won't have pots waking you up at 5am on Sunday mornings since the bonfire doesn't happen anymore
thanks for the encouraging words man.. and thanks for reminding me to post this special message to any UThug/bonghorn (copyright BigTexxx 2007 ) who wants to hi-jack my thread:
As a freshman, you probably will not get your first choice. I got lucky applying for housing late and a guy who didn't come back allowed me to go into a south side dorm, Eppright. I liked it because they were the nicest dorms on campus, private bath, large closets, carpeted floors, etc. The downside, we were right next to the Aggie Band practice field and there were mornings when I was "revived" by the sounds of them practicing.
planning on doing it the Monday right after I finish my finals (not this monday, the one after), I will be visiting UH, TAMU, and Rice, and I would've visited UT except it's too far away and the way the bonghorns on this board behave didn't impress me I still applied there though, just in case something goes crazy in the world and I suddenly feel the urge to go to UT (which will happen on the same day Rafer shoots 60% from the 3 point line, Chuck Hayes hits all of his freethrows, Yao doesn't do his "damn it" hand clap in a game, the Texans win a championship, and Van Gundy grows hair on his head)..
I lived in FHK (Fowler to be exact) and those are the balcony dorms if u didn't know. They are pretty small to have 2 people stay in them. We were joined with another room and shared a bathroom and shower. These rooms are the epitome of old school, but did I enjoy it...HELL YEAH. They actually had me on a girls floor when I lived there. I don't know if they do that any more, but it was due to overcrowding and more guys wanting on-campus housing than girls I guess. Anyways, when I applied, I wanted the modular dorms b/c I wanted more space and more modern rooms. Mods are much nicer, but the way I see it, u only have one freshman, soph, jr, sr year at A&M and u can live nicer when u get out and make money. The main thing is air conditioning as mentioned b/f, have a cool roommate, and have cool people close by. Unfortunately, it's luck of the draw on the roommate and friends if u go potluck. Some of the people I met potluck while at A&M my first year are friends who will be there for me for the rest of our lives and several will be participating in my wedding in July. If u need any more details about dorms, just ask away on this thread. Congrats on the acceptance by the way.
thank you very much man, that was some seriously helpful advice.. so from your experience, what should my first choice be? and do you know anything about the honors dorm? is it nerdy and weird or is cool, peaceful, but yet fun?
I did not care much for the HOTEL 6 style dorms on the northside then again I was not big on the Northside Wells/Epright were very nice but they of course are the most expensive [only having one roommate was good. . .suitemates suck] Rocket River
h*ll . . before the BonFire fell Having the RED ASTONS with their fricking Horn waking you up at 5 am to goto CUT sucked Rocket River
All the dorms have some sort of A/C now. Hart and Walton, the two oldest dorms on campus, had window A/C units installed in the summer of 2002. I'd try to avoid those two, though they're not terrible. I lived in Hart for two years. I would probably try to stay Southside. If you can get into Eppright or Wells and can afford it, I would probably do that. Otherwise I would probably shoot for Aston or Dunn.
