http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2002/0118/1313645.html bill parcells turned them down, now doesnt this mean they have an egg on their face now
I agree I've said all along that firing Dungy was a mistake, and Tampa just KNEW that they could get either Parcells or Spurrier. Now, they are SCREWED!!
From what I've heard, the whole tampering with coaches currently in position thing, both on Parcell and Tampa Bay's part, has been really detrimental to their cause. They thought the they had a deal on the table, but Parcells ego has been hurt because other coaches/mgmt around the league don't like what he's been doing in trying to get some assts rounded up, so he changed his mind and turned the offer down. He can coach, but he sure brings a lot of baggage. Tampa Bay owners houdl have known this.
Well Tampa Bay, it was a nice little run you had there...You can go back to being the laughingstock of the NFL again...
don't be surprised if bill parcells still ends up being the head coach of the tampa bay bucs next season.
Didn't Chris Mortensen say that Parcells wants Spurrier money-- an amount that Spurrier could not have gotten from the Bucs? He also wants a piece of ownership. Since they are over a barrel, they might just cave in. I hope Dungy comes to Carolina but I fear he is Indy-bound.
The Bucs deserve what they get. I lived in Tampa Dungys first two years. He worked wonders for that team, they are that good because of his ability to evaluate defensive talent. Sure the guy may not be an offensive mastermind, but he gets the job done. I feel soory for the town of Tampa, they are going to have a loser on their hands again
Not sure if this is totally true, but I saw somewhere that Jon Gruden was interested in the Bucs job....
What? Have you been watching the Bucs in the playoffs since Dungy's been around? His conservative style is why the Bucs suck in the playoffs. TB did a great thing by axing Dungy. The only mistake they made was not pursuing Spurrier as hard as Was did. Not to mention, TB was not going to pony up the money Spurrier was looking for. TB is now supposedly looking to lure Gruden.
Gets the job done? If you count 10-6 and a 1st round loss every year as "getting the job done" then you have very low standards.
The fact remains that talent-wise the Bucs should be among the elite in the NFL. Dungy has UNDERACHIEVED. Believe it or not. Too many people think these are the same Buc players as from 10 years ago.
Changes had to be made. I heard the Gruden to Bucs rumor on ESPN. Appears that the Glazer family wants a big name coach to cover up the poor handling of the situation (thinking Parcells was a lock).
He took them to the NFC championship game against the Rams and it came down to a very close call on a Tampa reception in the fourth quarter. The Rams then beat the Titans for the Super Bowl, which the Bucs likely would have won because it was played in Tampa. I would say that at least some of their problems were caused be having below average quarterbacks and different offensive coordinators every year.
