I am going to keep this short cause it's kind of late.

How big has the lack of turnovers been for the Rox success?

    Last night 6 turnovers

    Tonight 6 turnovers.

The Rockets in the last 7 years have been ranked near the bottom most of the time.
Even early this year, I don't think we had any single digit turnover games. We have a very low turnover game every other day.

Low turnovers means no fastbreak points and it means you get more shots than the opposition. We haven't shot the ball super great, but we're in every game and sometimes blowing teams out.

When Yao comes back our FG% will go higher because Yao is so efficient and the shots from our role players will be even more wide open.

The Rockets will be one of the most efficient offensive teams when Yao comes back as well as the most efficient defensive team.

    That is scary.

Feel free to add why you think our turnovers are kept at a minimum. Have we finally entered a low turnover era for the Rockets? :)

    1) Rockets push the ball up the court (Rafer), so they very rarely are left to make a tough decision late in the shot clock.

    2) They are getting more comfortable with JVG's system.

3)Tracy is more aggressive offensively so the offense doesn't stagnate.

4)Rafer is always under control (for all you Rafer haters, a turnover is equivalent to 2-3 missed shots :) )

5)Very unselfish team. Nobody cares who gets the shot. Ball moves fast. Crisp passes

Yeah, but if Yao comes back, TO will go up to double digit

Yao himself averages 4 turnovers a game.

yeah, its inevitable, the guy has such a high dribble and his passes go askew a lot. when he gets really good at passing out of a double team, our TO's will go down. on the flipside, the fg % of the rox will go up...thats always good

When Yao returns, he might add a few turnovers every game.

Give credit to Rafer, he really did a great job to keep the ball. Turnover is a big reason why JVG doesn't like V Span.

Give credit to JVG, he is the one keeps yelling at everyone else to keep the turnover low.

I see it like this, we dont have the horses to win alot of games with 15-20 turnovers.

Limiting to 14 at the absolute most is vital for us to continue winning.

I remember having an argument with someone a while back when I said that a Yao-centric offense will tend to be turnover prone. Even beyond his own turnovers, just trying to feed him the ball where he needs it will result in a extra turnovers for the team. That's not really a knock on him; he shoots a great percentage and he's generally the best option. But when trying to evaluate his contributions to the team, in total, that's something to take into account.

Right now, the Rockets have a much better flow on offense. And McGrady is masterful at generating points while keeping the turnovers low. When we integrate Yao back in, somehow McGrady needs to retain primary control on offense.

Yao has a higher number of TO due in large part to the refs allowing the defense to Hack-a-Yao. Now with a Hack-a-Shaq, Miami gets 2 freethrow attempts; while Hack-a-Yao gets the Rox a turnover.

TOs will definitely increase when Yao's comes back but so will FG% and offensive efficiency, which is what counts.

The reduction in TOs has been a HUGE part of our success. TOs often ignite fast breaks for the other team which is why a TO is worse than a missed shot. The reduced TOs help prevent easy baskets and is one reason our efficiency on defense has been so good since Yao went down.

IF IF IF Yao is properly integrated into our offense after he gets back, we will be one tough team!

I think Bullard hit a key point when he talked about when Yao does come back, Yao will clog up the middle too much and there won't be as much movement in the offense when he gets back. I'd like for TMac to be the primary facilitator on offense also, but Yao needs to get his touches to get back in the groove, meaning less of the JHo post ups we've been seeing.

Dont blame Yao's size on his high turnovers. Its not that he lacks skill controlling the ball, its just that he gets so many touches. Look at the league leaders in TOs, all the superstarts are there, because they have the ball most of the time. THe PG just brings the ball up, Yao has to make plays and the paint is so crowded and it gets so physical there (Thanks to the rules), which add to his high TOs. His efficiency makes up for it anyway.

JVG has to make adjustments when Yao comes back. This team is playing very well with a faster paced offense since Yao went down. When Yao comes back the offense needs to be run through Mcgrady, he is more capable of giving us 30 ppg game in and game out than Yao along with ceating offense for others. Yao needs do what exactly what Deke is doing, providing 10+ rbs, blocking shots and be a defensive presence in the paint. His offense is going to be a plus but he shouldn't be taking 25 shots a game, TMac should be getting the bulk of the shots. I think an ideal line for Yao when he gets back would be 16ppg, 10rb and 2 blocks.

What the hell are you smoking?! 16 points? Yao is our more efficent scorer downlow, and I'd much rather have jumper taken 6 feet away from the basket than a 20 foot jumpshot. Sure Yao clogs up the lane, but that's why we use him, because hte Rockets slow the entire game down just for Yao.
The only way T-Mac would ever get the bulk of the shots is when Yao is sitting on the bench.

i don't think yao needs to be given the ball every possession, especially since we need to conserve his energy for the long haul. Whenever I watch the Spurs I notice how Duncan doesn't touch the ball every possession. They begin force feeding him the ball when the offense needs a spark or during crunch time. I think JVG needs to continue using this faster paced, perimeter oriented, offense rather than going back to the methodical pace when we had Yao. We have the talent on this team, we just need to find creative ways to utilize all the talent. Oh and TMac should be our #1 option, while Yao should be 1a. We get easier buckets with Tmac creating rather than Yao. Open layups are always better than open threes.

If Tmac keeps up this level of play, he should be the primary option. Yao shoots a higher percentage, but feeding him too often can be difficult and predictable. Tmac's style is more dynamic and I believe he's the better playmaker. He also keeps the turnovers down; we at least get a shot off. Feed Yao when he's got good position or when a play calls for it, but Tmac can score and get that defense scrambling all over the court. They can co-exist. The ideal is Tmac getting 25+ppg and plenty of assists to Yao, with Yao scoring 23+ on EASIER baskets than he got before.

I don't think its going to be that drastic, Yao would slow the game down but he would still take about 25 shots or more likely 20 shots. All of Yao's shots are like super high % shots. These are money shots coachs always stress to take the high % option. Mcgrady's extra scoring ability now should open Yao up to less double and triple teams to the extent I expect him to score more. I mean early on in the season Mcgrady was in a funk, and we more or less concluded it was a confidence issue with him since his treatment has given him the confidence to elevate and pull up this jumpshot. Heck today with the Grizzlies he hung two huge dunks on them. It'll fit.

I hardly agree with you.If we can't have inside offense ,we never be a stable team. :(

When yao comes back, our shot selection will all depends on what the opponents give us. If they clog up the lane and constantly double Yao, then Tmac will have more room to operate outside and just play his game. If they dare single coverage Yao, we would just feed Yao the ball every single possetion and let him go to work. I would still like Tmac to have the ball and make the decision, as he is the best decision maker on our team.

It is truely a luxury that we have two superstars that cannot be contained one on one, and we can just let the opponent pick their poison.
