U.S. intelligence officials have received "reliable reports" that members of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban have a plan to destroy a mosque in Mazar-e Sharif and then blame U.S. air attacks, two U.S. officials told CNN on Friday.

Man, this is a twisted society over there.......but it is war, and desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.

I've never understood how these kinds of things leak. I mean, how many people really need to know about this outside of Mr. I-Rule-The-Taliban, Mr. Taliban-Military-Advisor, and Mr. Taliban-Special-Operative?

It might have worked pretty well in terms of popular support in Muslim countries, had they been smart enough to pull it off. Fortunately for us, our enemy isn't too bright!

I wonder if they would stoop to killing their own "citizens?"

My guess is that Pakistani intelligence operations is more effective than some of us at first believed.

Remember when Pakistan was annoyed that the US revealed the full extent of its cooperation, because it feared such revelations might jeopardize its secret service? Well, I'm guessing that they're still out there in Afghanistan.

It's almost certainly not our own guys, since the CIA publicly admitted that it had goofed by not maintaining enough indigineous contacts. Could be a ruse... but some people have been warning about that for years, so probably not.

I just wonder how much we've offered Pakistan. Their help is giong to turn out to be invaluable.

Makes one wonder about that village we supposedly flattened too. You know, the one that was shown on TV by that CNN reporter that was allowed to travel there escorted by the Taliban?!

its a bit hard to believe.
the taliban is pretty much on their own. so its not like they're trying to get sympathy from other nations. and quite frankly no one's gonna pay them any.
and judging by their huge ego (from their official's statements) they're not the type.
i'll just believe since the bomb drops, it blows.
