To cut to the chase, I'm in a situation where my uncle is in town and found an abandoned puppy. He's leaving and they're taking it to the shelter on Monday if nobody claims it. It's some kind of mix I'm pretty sure involving a labrador to some extent. I think it's going to end up smaller than a lab. It's got a great disposition. Anyway, I've been wanting a dog for a while and this turns up. The problem is that I'm a student. I live in an apartment that allows dogs, but it's still an apartment. Financially I can handle it, but I'm more worried about the dog's wellbeing when I'm going to be gone the majority of the day. Would it be reasonable to adopt a dog in my situation? I don't want to end up like all the stupid girls that got those little rat dogs so they could be like Paris Hilton and now regret it. I guess I just don't want him to get put to sleep or whatever.
I'm a student and i have a dog(white shepard). It is difficult but it is possible. However i have the dog togheter with my girlfriend, so it is easier then doing it alone. The things that are importent, is that you need someone who can walk your dog, or take care of your dog for a couple of days, if you are to busy with your study(like parents, or friends). Also remember that at some point you are going to work, and then you will not be at home a lot. The most importent thing for the dog is that you will walk it enough. or bycicle with it(he/she running along). Or trowing a ball, and the dog fetching ti. You need to be able to get the dog tired. My dog lifes in a 20 square metre room. And she is a big dog(like a big german shepard). But we can walk for a long time, and we trow and fetch a ball a couple of times each day. It is very importent you have enough time for it. Having a dog i great. But you have to be sure you are ready for it. Because it takes a lot of your time, especially the first year. So really think about if you have the time, and will feel like spending a lot of your time on the dog(also a couple of years from now). If you are ready it is great to have a dog. We love having our dog around. and walking with her.
That is the reason why many people have cats! If only there are dogs as easy to take care as cats or cats that are as fun as dogs.
i wouldn't do it. i understand why you would want to b/c it's so cute and you've always wanted one. but there's a reason they don't let animal shelter volunteers/workers adopt until after a couple of months working there, and that's b/c people think too much with their heart and not their heads. as a matter of fact, they don't let anyone adopt 2-3 weeks prior to Christmas for this exact reason. you may think you're responsible enough but it's alot harder than you think. btw, i have a lab myself. they require alot of playtime otherwise your apt will be trashed upon arrival everyday.
