As usual, a disclaimer: this is not an official SXSW list, but all bands listed have been cited as playing SXSW in the press, via their PR firms, radio, MySpace, or their official websites (among other things). Thus, 95%+ of these bands should be in Austin in March.

SXSW: A great idea that has been given the complete "Night of the Living Dead" treatment by the major record labels. No thanks.

I've lived in Austin for 7 years and would love to be able to go for once. Unfortunately, the arm bands are ridiculosly priced and don't even come close to guaranteeing you entrance. It's a great showcase and has done wonderful things for many bands. It just really sucks for locals who just want to go see a show. I went in 1995 with a $50 arm band and got into every show I wanted...except for George Clinton & P-funk. It was a blast. I've been twice since w/o arm band. Covers were $20 and up and that's only if you could get in. It's a great week, if you're an industry exec...

oh yes!!! and with mike watt on bass. it probably wont happen, but it would be killer to have them do the free show on auditorium shores.

Artist. SXSW is nothing more than a corporate circle jerk these days. It is now the antithesis of its origins.

you've lived in austin for 7 years and haven't figured out that sxsw is really all about the "day parties?"
day parties = sxsw for austinites
they all have free beer and quite a few of them have free food (bbq or mex). pretty much every band that plays a sxsw "showcase" plays at least one day party and one "after hours" party.
    open your eyes...

I looked through that long list and counted 24 that I knew for certain I had heard OF, but only maybe 10 that I had actually heard.

That's ok. It's been like that since SXSW started. The main difference is that most of these bands are supposed to be popular/semi-popular indie bands. When I was first going to SXSW in the early days, it was 15 or 20 popular artists and several hundred unsigned, barely known artists showcasing their talent.

Now, it is just a cluster**** of indie media and labels with zero interest in signing new talent.

It's fun to play it because of all the people, but it has become so incredibly fragmented with all the day shows and "secret" or surprise performances, it is hardly worth the trip. Oh, yeah, nevermind the fact that a wrist band used to be $25 and now its, what, $200? Pass.

you can find wristbands for 120 bucks on average. To me thats a pretty good deal to practically see any show you want.

Yeah, if you have a lot of shows you want to see. Problem is, where else in any other industry has there been a cost increase of 500% in 15 years? That's crazy.

...hmmm... if you felt that the $25 was all that all these bands were worth 15 years ago.

Seems like they're pricing now based on what the market will bear. It can be difficult to argue w/ that.

I've only been once, and I got in with a single entry pass to a show.

But I was wondering how the regulars with arm bands get into shows. From what I have heard, is that the record exec's get in first, so then only the remaining allotment goes to the arm band people.

Do you have to lineup really early if you are an arm band attendee? Since some venues are quite small, wouldn't this leave alot of regulars out of some good shows?

    Just wondering?

Which is completely opposite of why SXSW was started in the first place.

I'm sure that you and Jeff know what you're talking about since ya'll are musicians, but these guys still seem to think it's a good idea:

    http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/recordlabel/recordlabelfull.html

Or accoring to this quote on the SXSW site, NY Times agrees:
"The festival is still a place where record label scouts see bands and make deals. But it is also, for many more performers, a hub for operating outside the recording business.... It could be finding a European distributor for a self-released album or the offer of a Midwestern college tour instead." New York Times, March 20, 2006 http://2007.sxsw.com/music/

And this indie site seems to think the prelim list of bands is 'great':

I'd pay $120 just to see the stooges. However, I'm sure I won't get in. Like the futants, I'll be hitting the day shows hard. I'm too old to make it to the after hours parties. Looks like a good beginning lineup. Can't wait to see Les Savy Fav.

Bands I want to see so far.

    Bloc Party
    Blonde Redhead
    Les Savy Fav
    Thunderbirds are now
    Turbonegro
    The Stooges
    Erase Eratta
    Diplo
