What about a S. Swift and J. Williams package from Memphis. Jerry West is always willing to make a big deal, and both are surrounded by trade rumors. Who would we give up?

lol - I can't even imagine J-dub and Van Gundy together - JVG would want him traded before the season started.

Memphis need another big star to go to next level, I don't think we could anything they would interest.

Exactly. As much as JVG probably would love Swift added to this team, he equally probably DOESNT want Jason Williams and his terrible contract added to this team.

it's funny how he gets bashed here.

he is alot better than any PG we currently have. i think VG would be good for him now that he had Hubie already take a big chunk from his a.. i think he's alot more of a PG than SF3 ever was. His passes are sometimes amazing, and sometimes not soo, but you can't deny his great court vision.

anyhow, won't ever happen since his contract is pretty ugly.

There are roughly 13 teams that will be under the cap enough to sign Swift straight up. There are only 10 players that should be signed for more than MLE. Of those only 2-3 will end up switching teams. There will not be a bunch of sign and trades this off season.

Astute observation. Aside from Swift and SAR, who else do you believe will move for MLE+ money?

I'd rather have Wells or Posey.

Posey would be awesome for this team just like he was before. Everyone wants a small forward or a point guard but I really believe a small forward would solve so many problems with the added bonus of moving Tracy to his natural spot.

This is a very incorrect perception. What you have done is found a website listing team salaries and picked 13 under the cap teams. You have totally neglected how expiring contracts impact the equation under the CBA. I'm going to use MIL as an example of how your "13 under the cap teams" uses faulty logic.

If you go to a website and the site tells you the Bucks have ~$28m committed for 2005-06, the assumption is that the Bucks are under the cap and big time FA players. They are not. All of the Bucks' expiring contracts hit their cap between 120% and 300% depending on the contract. The Bucks do not get the perceived cap space until the renounce or re-sign their FA's. In this case...Michael Redd.

The Bucks moved Van Horn, Mike James and others to re-sign Redd and not lose him to free agency. They have his Bird Rights and will probably offer Redd whatever it takes between $7m and $11m. If all other FA's are renounced, and Redd is re-signed for say $9.0mm, the Bucks now have $7m to complete their entire roster since they have renounced all other FA's to get the cap space you are giving them. (The Cavs handling of Ilgauskas and McGinnis would be another example).

IOW, you can have cap space or you can have exceptions (Larry Bird, Early Bird, MLE) but you can't have both. By my estimate, CHA, ATL, NO and possibly Utah (depending on how they handle Collins, Bell & Eisley) are the only teams with significant cap space. Everyone else will get that space eaten up to re-sign their own FA's .

Ya, Posey would be a great addition to the team. He played awsome D for us, he is longer and much more athletic than DW. Plus, I think Posey has a good enough shot to play SG and keep TMac at SF.

    Sura
    Posey
    TMac
    Swift
    Yao

That would be a sick lineup, but an unlikely lineup.

I'd do it. I don't particularly like JWill, and white chocalate is the most stupid nick ever(and a tad offensive), but the dude definitely has skills.

And if freaking Hubie Brown can get him to play under control, I'm sure JVG can find a way to utilize him as well.

That would solve two pretty big problems on the rox(starting pf and pg), and then we could try to address the 2 guard via the draft or MLE, or simply move Sura to the 2 if he's not involved in the deal.

    Yao / Dike
    Swift / Howard
    TMac / who cares
    ??? : (Sura/MLE/Draft pick/Wesley)
    JWill

Would be a pretty damn good lineup on the court ...

Besides the fact that we really do not have a chance to get Swift and Jason Williams.

With a need for a point guard and Marvin Williams the second best talent in the draft, the Hawks will look to trade their #2 overall selection to the Bobcats for the fifth and thirteenth pick, where they can draft Deron Williams.

The Hawks will also look to sign Stromile Swift in free agency, as they have nearly $20 million in cap space. [READ]

Why is Tracy moving back to sg a bonus? He thrived for us at the sf position, and I'd rather prefer him stay there. Now his starting backcourt-mates I would like to change.

I was just about to ask where in the world he got that 13 teams figure myself.

Even if you include teams like Milwaukee, I still don't see 13 teams under the cap.

Only 10 players who should get more than MLE? Whether you think teams are crazy for signing them is one thing, but facts of the CBA conditions remain.

    1. Allen
    2. Hughes
    3. Johnson
    4. Redd
    5. Chandler
    6. Curry
    7. Dalembert
    8. Ziggy
    9. Swift
    10. Mobley
    11. Toine Walker
    12. SAR
    13. Radmanovic

Plus guys like Kwame Brown, Donyell Marshall, and Bobby Simmons. Rumors already say Antonio Daniels will get full MLE at least.

That's a lot of players who will be getting a lot of bids. In efforts to slightly outbid other teams, I think it may lead to more activity and jockeying than you're expecting.

Great points, GATER, as usual. The team I've been worrying about losing Swift to is ATL. He makes a lot of sense there, and I can see them offering him well above the MLE.

If you were Swift, would you take 6-9 mil/yr and go to ATL, with a team who already has two star rookies, a solid player in Harrington, and bound to get another two or three in this year's draft? Or would you sign for the MLE to pursue a championship, now that its your payday?

If I'm Jerry West, am I really willing to do a s&t to help my competitor win it all, just so I could get one or two of Houston's role players or a low draft pick?

... being realistic, as I'm thinking more about it, I'm not so sure this one will happen.

If you could move JWill to a third team (Sacramento for Cuttino? unlikely, but...) then perhaps.

I thought of the same thing and didn't post it because I knew it was unlikely.

But yes, get Posey instead (he had a bad year last year; injuries?) and I'm all for it.
