http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4771681 Am I the only one who finds almost everything he said to be offensive? It just so happens that my family tradition is that we wake up and open presents - then we spend time preparing and cooking food - we eat - then we sit around as a family and watch NBA basketball. We've done it my whole life. I understand Van Gundy wants to take a day off from basketball on x-mas. It's his job and it takes up most of his life. However, for those of us who enjoy watching a basketball game but don't eat, breathe, sleep basketball, it's a very pleasant way to spend our x-mas together. I also understanding wanting to be with your family on x-mas - but when you get paid what he does to be away from them - stfu and count your lucky stars. Meanwhile, a friend of mine is working as an independent contractor in Iraq because he makes better money to support his family than he can here. He literally dodges bullets to support his wife and children who he sees about once a year - and Stan is whining that he gets paid what? 5 million a year and he can't have x-mas off? Seriously, pay me what Van Gundy gets paid and I'll work 12 hours a day, 365 days a year for a good ten years before I'll complain. Also, I will kill people if that's what it takes. end rant.
I agree with you, it's kinda offensive when say he feel sorry for people who got nothing to do on christmas than watch nba games .
bad comments, he is angry because all holidays has to be on his job, but a lot of people has to work on holidays. and watching NFL games in thanksgiving, its a tradition, that comes with the day.
And what about those who don't celebrate Christmas? I'm not Christian, but I support the holiday and understand why everything is closed that day. There better be some form of entertainment on If I'm going to be indoors sitting on my butt in front of the TV the entire day I can't stand either of these Nutty Van Gundy's. I remember last year when Jeff was doing a Mavs game, Terry started to get the crowd involved and he said something like I never understood why players do this. He basically said it was a childish gesture and that if the team performs well there is no need to get the crowd involved. This is the same guy who was unhappy with the environment at Toyota Center while his Rockets were boring people to sleep by grinding it out and decided to buy 50 season tickets for those rowdies to help enhance the environment. Both are such tools.
if he won , we would not be having this conversation. He has the softest team ever. Battier would fit right in. SVG sucks! he has a good team but he can't coach for ****..
SVG is one of the grumpiest people in the NBA. Yeah, Stan, you know the money they generate from those games goes to pay your 7-figure salary, right? If you want to enjoy holidays on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year, go find a job the Regular Joe does.
"I actually feel sorry for people who have nothing to do on Christmas Day other than watch an NBA game," the Orlando Magic coach said. LOL!!!! I am sure he is going to get a season's greetings from Stern if he hasnt received one already.
One or two games is fine. But I think this year's schedule went overboard. Five games? Two of those were LA Clippers-Phoenix and Denver-Portland. Limit the schedule to two or three games. I'm not one for sitting around and watching an entire day's worth of regular season basketball -- any day of the year.
Well they put The Clippers/Phoenix game on the schedule because they wanted to market Blake Griffin but he got hurt. Not sure what is wrong with a Denver/Portland matchup.
The league has been good to all of us in terms of what we get out of all these TV contracts and everything, so it would be a little disingenuous to complain too much," Van Gundy said. yes, he does. he even says he knows it won't change. he's just saying he'd rather not have to work on the holidays and could be with his family (apparently doc rivers agrees). just because he has to put up with it doesn't mean he wants to put up with it. just like i'm sure we all have things about our jobs we wish were different but we're not going to quit over.
To a basketball fan it's clearly evident why so many games are on the schedule and which teams are scheduled to play. However this is a ratings move, and I don't see how it makes much sense to schedule small market teams that simply don't have the national appeal. It's not the NFL. A regular season NBA game does not have anywhere near the significance of a regular season NFL game, thus people (like most casual fans and even myself, an avid NBA watcher) will get bored and tired of sitting through endless, tradition-less, non-marquis matchups. SVG isn't complaining so much as giving an opinion (which was before the game). Even though he's getting paid millions, SVG does have the right to an opinion. It's a bit unfair to have to play both on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Should be one or the other.
Thank you so much. I hate how people figure because someone is earning x amount of money they lose all right to have an opinion re. their occupation. SVG understands the situation, never said he'd give it up but he has the right to say he doesn't like it.
Well, I agree he retains the right to have an opinion. But there is a big difference between complaining about this to his family, friends and loved ones or even his co-workers and whining to the media about it. Sorry, Stan. I do not sympathize. And no. He just really doesn't have the right to say that to the media unless he wants a whole lot of people in a whole lot worse situations to think he's an inconsiderate, self-absorbed jerk. I think this is pretty well on par with Latrell Sprewell's comments about having a family to feed.
I understand him. Its been I think 2 or 3 years straight that his team has had to play on Christmas. I would be pissed aswell.
