I heard my dad say our electric bill went up this month, he told us all make sure we turn the lights off if were not in the room, which I do anyway.

My electric bill was higher this past month than what it normally is at 83.33. However, that is nothing compared to natural gas bills. I think it was last winter, but I had a gas bill that jumped from like 60 bucks to 150 bucks in a month. Now that there really really sucked.

$200 last month. 3BR 2BA 1600 sqft house in Southwest Houston.

I crank it up above 80 during the day and down to 75 when I get home from work. Once the house is cooled down, I level it off at 78 degrees. I have two ceiling fans that are constantly running, and a ton of insulation in my attic.

    $595.

    2 story 3450 sq ft.

I keep the AC at 78 all the time (I need to switch to programable AC controlls).

I run my pool pump 24/7 though because my wife likes the waterfall and I like a clean pool.

I also need to sell my electric dryer and get a gas dryer.

I have a friend who had a 5700 sq ft house and their bill last month was 700 and this month it is 900.

A relevant question would be what energy efficiency of your AC unit is. The highest is 19 SEERS. In my area, you are more likely to get a 14-SEER AC if you want to upgrade.

Just a reminder, folks, you can have a $500 tax credit if you do energy efficiency improvement on your home.

Wow, I've got most of you beat. :(

1700 sq foot house in west Houston
$294.00 (down from $310 last month)
We keep our thermostat at around 75 when we are home, except turn it down to 73 at night.
Entergy Electric Company - And our rates are actually lower now than they were with Reliant.

We've only lived in this house since June, the A/C system is really old though. The whole thing needs to be replaced, but until then we're just gonna have to deal with the high bills. :(

What is the average life span of an a/c unit? What typically goes bad on them?

Well just a few weeks ago we had part of ours catch on fire. I think that qualifies as "going bad." :D

I think the part was called the capacitator or something like that. We got it replaced for $220. Sucks to be putting money into an old system, but we just cant afford the thousands right now that a new system would cost. Also I think insulation is a big part of the problem with older houses.

    $305

    1600 square feet

It's an old house that can be drafty. I keep my thermostat at 79 24/7. I use a window unit upstairs at night.

    210.00 - 2000 sq. feet in Katy

I don't feel so bad anymore after this thread. I turn it down to 70 near sundown and keep it 78 during the day if I'm not home and 76 if I am.

Whoever heard of ACs making houses hotter? :)

But I know what you mean about the insulation thing...our house got a brand new central air system for the first time in it's 85-year existence (Hyde Park in Austin has a LOT of homes without central air), but they didn't put any insulation in. During the day, you have to set the thermostat to 73 in order to get it to 75. As a result, the bill was around $290 for a 1,500 sq ft house.

Does anybody ever use attic fans anymore? I used to rent a house that had an attic fan. It worked wonders to get warm air out of the attic and pull in fresh air... and just keep air moving.

Most powered attic fans actually do more harm than good from everything I've read. Here's an article : http://www.askthebuilder.com/236_Powered_Attic_Fans_-_Attic_Insulation_Facts.shtml

    Your electric service Entergy

    This months bill $86

    House square footage 1850

Thermostat setting 85 during the day & 80 when home

Just switched to Entergy from Reliant. Last month Reliant's last bill was $102 so it looks like Entergy is cheaper. I live in Houston.
