SURPRISE! Dems Break Promise: Stimulus Bill to Floor Friday

    by Connie Hair
    02/12/2009

In a press conference Thursday, the House Republican leadership spoke candidly about being kept out of the House-Senate conference on the Obama-Pelosi-Reid so-called “economic stimulus” bill. They confirmed they had not yet seen the text of the bill as of 4 p.m.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he was unsure how many Democrats would vote with Republicans again on this bill but that he thought Republicans “may get a few” Democrats to side with them. The fact that the Demos have now broken their promise to have the public able to see the bill for 48 hours may drive more Dems into the Republican camp.

don’t know, ‘cause they haven’t seen the bill either,” Boehner said.

“The American people have a right to know what’s in this bill,” Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind) told HUMAN EVENTS after the press conference. “Every member of Congress -- Republicans and Democrats -- voted to post this bill on the internet for 48 hours, 48 hours ago. We’ll see if the Democrats keep their word.”

Actually -- as of 5:15 pm, the Democrats had broken their word. The stimulus bill -- which we still haven’t seen -- will be released late tonight and will be brought up on the House floor at 9 am tomorrow.

The following statement was released by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer at 4:57 p.m.:

"The House is scheduled to meet at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow and is expected to proceed directly to consideration of the American Recovery and Reinvestment conference report. The conference report text will be filed this evening, giving members enough time to review the conference report before voting on it tomorrow afternoon."

Meanwhile, at an earlier presser Thursday, Pelosi -- while talking about legislation regarding school construction funds -- said it was vital to see the language of a bill before making decisions. ReadtheStimulus.org had the following quote:

“With all of this you have to see the language. You said this --- I said that --- I understood it to be this way --- you know, we wanted to see it in writing and when we did that then we were able to go forward."

"Around here language means a lot. Words weigh a ton and one person's understanding of a spoken description might vary from another's. We wanted to see it. And not only just I had to see it, I had to show it to my colleagues and my caucus. We wanted to take all the time that was necessary to make sure it was right."

Congressional members are also exchanging barbs via the popular social network Twitter. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) twittered, "Don't know when we're going to vote. Will the no votes delay vote just because they can? Speed is important. They know that."

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) twittered back, “Those in favor of speed over commonsense may just be afraid of letting the People know what they are ramming through.”

I would try to explain how incredibly stupid the premise of this thread is, but it would be lost on OddsOn, who is one our less gifted posters.

You know it's a good article when it starts out like this...

There is so much that is funny about that.

If my thread solicits a first response from you then I know its got legs...

But don't hold back on my behalf, please tell us how stupid the premise is of congress posting the details of the largest spending bill in US history so the people who will actually be paying for this pork roll can fully understand its content?

So the Republican leadership wants to hold the bill up for 2 days so they can nitpick it to death when they have no intention on voting for it, regardless of its contents?

Sam, why do you always resort to insulting people when you disagree with them?

Yeah I'm sure he has read 800 pages in the last few hours. IF it is true that most of the spending will not come until after 2010 I don't see how waiting 48 hours should be a problem. unlike the "bailout bill" this one seems to get better the longer it stays in there.

There's a good bit of irony in Republicans complaining about transparency after 8 years of Bush. It's like their memories have been washed away by the sands of time.

I've seen laid out where the money is being spent online, and on television.

I really hate this card. The "They did it so we can do it card" with this logic you really have no right to complain about the other side and change can never take place.

I agree the GOP is using it for making the DEMs look bad but use it to the advantage of making everything better!

OK then you know more than me. Is the majority being spent after 2010? If so why not wait 48 hours to allow any little surprises to come to light?

That's a good question. As to when it will all be spent I haven't heard, just what it will be spent on. I thought that most was to be spent in the first two years, but I'm not sure.

It's called politics and both sides play it. To deny that this same crew of Republicans stonewalled Democrats at every turn on just about every bit of policy for all of Bush's terms is just to deny reality. In this case, Republicans are playing politics with the future of our economy. They're being every bit the obstructionists and whiny b****es that they accused Democrats of being during Bush's terms. Why does it only matter to some of you now? I don't remember any pissed off posts from OddsOn citing the conservative underground's outrage the last 8 years when Bush bullied and attacked Democrats on everything under the sun that they disagreed on. If anything, the Democrats cooperated with Bush far more than Republicans are doing now with Obama. Republicans continue to be ideologically entrenched in failed policies and it will continue to hurt this country.

The more hilarious thing is that, judging from multiple threads started around here, a lot of Republicans appear to believe that Congress is going to/able to pass secret bills shielded from public knowledge - until the crack detectives of Human Events Online are on the case....lol.

You all get an F in high school civics - this is why you have no business governing.

Otherwise, you can whine and b**** about the heinous crime of the conference committee taking an extra few hours to finish the text of the bill and post it online, mind you this is text that most/all of you will never read, addressing problems that a lot of you seem to not reallly understand, and dealing with a bill you will oppose simply because it has the support of the guys with the D next to their name and the best bet of the guys with an R next to their name is to oppose it no matter what and hope for the worst.

Actually wait, that is what you are doing. Because you are idiots.

Do you truly believe that the future of our economy lies in the success of this "stimulus package".

Like clockwork, somebody chimes in with, form this pithy use of quotes, what appears to be the germ of the argument that additional spending does not act as a demand stimulus.

    It's like whack-a-mole of ignorance.

Frank Lautenberg (D) has admitted that the bill is too lengthy to be able to read in a single day. How can anyone expect our politicians to vote on a bill, so hotly contested, without reading it? How can anyone defend that?
