My cousin, Chrissie, is on active duty in the US Army. My step-sister, Laura, is on active-duty in the Air Force, as is her husband. They have two small children, with beautiful red hair and green eyes. My fiance's family has many members in the military. I know that she's praying for all of them (she's a devout Catholic). Several friends are also in the military. I'm most worried for a friend named Boyd, who's in the Navy Seals, and would likely be one of the first sent in to combat. I hope they stay safe, and appreciate their sacrifices, which shall hopefully be small. That article that rH just posted scared the hell out of me for my friends and relatives. I'm sure others on here are worried about loved ones and friends as well.
haven -- thanks for posting this....couldn't agree more. One of my business partners is in the Army Reserves. He thinks it's possible he may get called up. My prayers are with all of these brave folks who sacrifice to make us safer.
Anybody see the Spielberg thing on HBO? In the documentary part about the making of the series a WWII vet tells how 4 young men from his hometown, in time, committed suicide-- apparently because they had been classified 4-F and had not been able to serve their country in a way that "satisfied" them.
I think everyone has family or extended family or friends in the service and I wish all the best. Be careful and get them first.
Haven, I agree, too. I have a coworker who I like and my nieces' husband who have been called up, too. One of the greatest supports we can give these people is to try to insure that the scope of the mission does not expand after we have brought Ben Ladin to justice and that American soldiers are killed resolving other problems that can still be solved diplomatically.
OUr prayers are with the armed forces. Sorry glynch, bringing in bin Laden isn't going to be enough. All that leaves is his terrorist organization, and the other ones around the world, to wreak havoc. Do you think that if someone killed the president that the United States would just go away? Taking out one terrorist, even if he is the leader, won't help unfortunately. I wish it did, but bringing in bin Laden without taking out the rest of the terrorist forces is just asking for trouble down the road.
Glynch- Most terrorists don't care about Diplomacy. They are bullies and need to be treated as such. As RM said catching Laden doesn't solve anything, it will be ceremonial for the US but it will only be a small step.
I agree that we need to get more than just the one guy. However, when they start talking about 60 countries around the world and they will be fighting for 4 or 5 years and that any country that cooperates with terrorists at all will be attacked, it sounds endless and a recipe for disaster.
Let's keep out of political argument in this thread . I'm sure we can all agree, that no matter what we disagree on regarding policy, we want our servicemen to be successful and come home safe.
