So, anyone interested in a friendly bet to generate money for the tipjar. $5 to play, all revenue goes to tipjar. The bet is simple: Will Ming be announced as starter of the first Home Game?? Regardless of injuries, I win if Ming is the starter for the Home Opener, and I lose if he is not.

For every $5 pledged to the tipjar by someone who thinks Ming won't start the first Home game, I will pledge $10. If you wait until after schedules are announced, the challenge becomes equal at $10 to $10.

WIN OR LOSE *all* the pledges are paid to the tipjar.

I further pledge that if I lose, EACH winner who pledges $5 to the tipjar gets a coupon to tell me to shut up on the BBS for any 24-hour period of your chosing, redeemable for the whole season. btw: you are not going to win this bet. :p

    Here's my take

I will win the bet because Ming will surely start within the 1st 7 games, and here's why:

Ming will be treated like any late-comer to camp, and might come off the bench for the first few games because of missing the Asian Games, but maybe not even that. He certainly won't be on the bench 7 games into the season. Hell, Olowakandi started all but 9 games. Bradley started right out of the gate. Smits 71 out 82 games. #1 centers don't come off the bench.

People say not starting Griffin stunted his development. Well, not starting Ming stunts THE ENTIRE TEAM's development.

Don't be silly. Kandi, Smits and Bradley all started. You will lose this bet; bet me!!!

Don't be silly with this talk that Rudy never starts rookies...that's not true. Not only does Rudy have a history of starting rookies (who aren't 19yrs old), but he has a history of changing his offense for rookies. Not only that, but the Rockets organization (which Rudy and CD have been a part of for a long time) as a history of starting rookies and changing offenses for rookies.

Changing your offense starts in camp. They are not going to practice an offense that utilizes a liability like Cato. They are going to be practicing a Ming offense...no bout a doubt it.

The future starts in camp, and Ming's offense will be practiced. We can't play that offense without Ming...and when he's on the bench in the 1st Q, Francis and Mobley can't learn. How can we change offenses with Cato on the floor with Francis/Mobley? Give Ming a few games if he needs it to rest and get up to speed after Asia, but Ming is the starter.

First game at Compaq Center, Ming's name will be announced. Bet me!

Hold it, hold it. First you say he will be the starter for the home opener. Then you say 'within the first 7 games.' Which is it? And also, do you mean only regular season or are you including preseason too? Who wins if Cato or Ming are injured?

    "My Take"

is not the same as "The Bet." The "My Take" is just to better equipt you guys with the truth, before you make a stupid bet THAT YOU WILL NOT WIN!!!!!

    The bet is simple:

First home game the announcer will announce Ming as the starter...I win.
First home game the announcer does not announce Ming as the starter...I lose.
Eligibility to Bet Me

$5 to play and to reserve a coupon to shut me up for any 24-hour period of your choosing. I will pledge $10 for every $5 pledged on behalf of this Summer 2002 Challenge.

No money exchanges hands. All money goes to the Tipjar. If you bet me and lose, your only loss is the $5 you game Clutch.

Now, if you want to up the ante...any Senior Member who pledges $10, I will plege $20. However, if you do this as a Senior Member and lose, I get a coupon to make you shut-up for any 24-hour period.

If I get enough of these...I can shut up the whole lame ass Senior Member BBS for 24-hours in one full swoop by cashing in all my coupons at the same time....hehe....and Clutch makes a killing.

Count me in. I have a question, though. If you lose and two people play their "Shut up, Heypee!" cards at the same time, what happens? Are you quiet for 48 hrs or does the second person lose his/her card?

That seems awfully early and Rudy usually doesn't replace his veteran starters so quickly, but I've learned my lesson not to bet against you concerning things Ming related. Three months ago you were pushing the aquisition of Ming which I thought was a pipe dream and now we got him. Who would a thunk. I'll donate my 5 and sit back and watch.

If The Cat puts $10 that he owes me (I cut half his debt for his birthday) into the tipjar in my name, count me as in.

I don't think Ming will start until after the 10th game of the season. Cato has not lost his starting position yet. The main part is because Ming won't be in camp until late.

In the meantime, I will practice my "shut up, heypisser".

Kim: that's fine with me... I can still mail you the money if you want it that way, but I can't find the email address with your mailing addy, so you'd need to email me again if you wanted to do that. Otherwise, I'll put $15 in the tip jar... five for myself, and ten for Kim. I'm not betting against HP, because I agree with him here, but like rH it's all for the cause...

Olowakandi didn't start at the outset of his rookie year. He started on the bench until a ways into the season.

make sure you send me your email to play. That way I can remind you about your pledge to the tipjar.

    my email is

    Email Me to Play

btw: there is a free way to put $5 in the tipjar, if they still offer this. All you have to do is register as a referral by Clutch (he might have to generate a link) and set up a PayPal account. That will deliver $5 free to Clutch's acccount as a referral. You have to deposit $100 in your Paypal bank account for this to get credited to Clutch. Then you can immediately turn around and withdraw that $100 and never use paypal again. $5 free to Clutch. cool.

Like I said in my opening post, Kandi started all but 9 games in the strike season. 36 out of 45.

    From NBA.COM

No matter how you slice it, that is not "until a ways into the season."

I'm not really into betting, but I like these friendly tipjar wagers and would like to see all friendly wagers made on the board in the future go to the tip jar. Much better than moniker-betting. So I'll put up $10.

I see your logic heypartner, but I see Rudy T bringing in the system in pieces. If he could put it in place in training camp and preseason, I think he would, but with Yao and Steve unavailable part of that time, I don't think the team will be ready to run the new plays by opening day. Rudy wants to win, and I think he'll stick with what's effective and comfortable for the guys before he'll put an incomplete product on the floor. So I say the team won't be ready and Rudy won't put in Yao unless he feels Yao's comfortable. I don't think Yao will be comfortable.

On the other hand, I could see him starting Yao simply because everyone's hyped up about him. There's a sentimentality about starting and having your named called out as a starter, and the Rockets may want to give the fans (in China, as well as the CBA) that sentimentality for the first game, even if he only plays a few minutes and is called back to the bench and/or doesn't start following games for awhile.

i'm not old enough to pay the tip jar, but if i was old enough and had a credit card i would love to help out this great website where i get bashed:D . But i bet ming will start, because he is a number 1 pick and he gets ticket prices up, and he fits our offense a lot better than Cato. Also he did averge 40,20,5 in some what of a proffesional league, and thats good enough for me. So let ming start lets see that number one pick material.

This is a new fundraiser idea for me to figure out how much to give the tipjar. Sorry. No way I'm matching everything that's already been put in the tipjar. :D

Not sure if I understand the question. Every bet comes with a tipjar pledge that I match. Money goes to the tipjar win or lose just to play the game.

    Is that clear to everyone.

You pledge $5 to the tipjar if you say, "I take that bet." When you say that, I will pledge $10. Win or lose, we put that money in the tipjar. If you win, you also win the coupon to shut me up for 24-hours. If I win, I get nothing but the satisfaction of raising money, (unless, of course, you are a Senior Member and want to up my matching pledge...see above post about the $10 for $20 match).

You would think I would learn about making bets on this BBS. :)

Oh well. Last time I sided with HP, and I had my moniker changed because of it. So, following that logic to its conclusion, it is absolutely impossible for HP to win this bet.

My $10 is in. You are going down, HP.
