The Suicide Girls are kind of a punk burlesque show - tonight is their one date in Houston for a long time. I'm probably going to go check them out tonight at the Engine Room - anyone else planning on going? Here's a review to kind of get an idea of what they are about..
One of the SG's top photographers lives in Houston. I used his work for one of the shows I did a few years ago. Lithium Picnic Site NSFW
I've gone through many a tube sock at SG.com, it's a lovely site, but the "show" is something else altogether. I've seen the DVD, and it's pathetic -- those girls CANNOT DANCE. There are dancers in the classic burlesque form, and there are strippers. These girls (they're all younger than me, 25, so I can call them that) are strippers. They can't dance, and they take their clothes off. Not much wrong with that, but it's just a trashy strip show performed by girls with Xiu Xiu albums.
Funny - after last night, I think I might have developed one. KellyDwyer is right, they are strippers - and that's a great thing. I was standing at the foot of the stage the whole night, and really enjoyed myself. There was about 10 acts, with the most memorable being the Reservoir Dogs "stuck in the middle with you" act, the naughty teacher act, and the classic burlesque chair act (enhanced with whipping cream and cherries). They also had a Japanese girl band touring with them. They were called Tsushimamire, and they rocked the house. They were very quiet and reserved-looking until they started performing, and then they just tore it up. The bassist was ridiculously talented - I was in awe watching her fingers fly. The weird thing is that they weren't particularly cute girls, but they were very cute at times as they performed. Just a great performance - they had the crowd calling for an encore, even though we had already been waiting 3-4 hours for the Suicide Girls. The band's own tagline is something like "crazy hard cute cool" and they pull it off. Anyway, it was altogether a great night - and even though I only got about 4 hours of sleep, it was well worth it.
