I got over a pretty mild cold about a month or so ago, but I've got a lingering cough that just won't go away. Unfortunately, I lack health insurance at the moment and likely won't have coverage until the fall when I start grad school.

I've tried general stuff like hot organic honey and lemon tea (Yogi brand) with lots of organic Texas honey to soothe my throat, but it pretty much only helps while I'm drinking it (same goes for cough drops).

I've tried ridiculous home remedy stuff like sucking on lemons dusted in salt and pepper--Obviously I'm getting desperate.

It totally sucks, and I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or experience with this. It's not really bad, but it's a nuisance to be sure.

    Thanks in advance!

    Mucinex.

You can get the expectorant or the expectorant & cough suppressant.

It takes a couple of days to kick in.

She doesn't have insurance. A doc would more than likely prescribe Cheratussin DAC syrup.

I was going to go with Yellow Tuss. Taste like pineapple and it work wonders. Plus purple is super expensive.

Weirdd. I have the same problem, but mine's been around for about a year.

I think mine may be a different case though... hopefully. Turns out I picked up some asthmatic symptoms due to my seasonal allergies.

I hate taking anything OTC and rarely do, but mucinex absolutely works. Get the expensive one, can't remember, whatever the added ingredient is, it makes a huge difference

fyi, there has been a thing going around where people get sick...and they are still coughing 6-8 weeks later. Not sure what is in the air, but Ive seen a ton of cases where this is going on. Its actually happening to me and my father as well. I know its a pain in the ass, but dont worry too much about it as it will slowly fade with time.

Mucinex has been the most effective way to control this, specially if you have some phlegm as the root of the problem.

P.S. Im hoping nothing I have said in this post can be used against me in the court of law.

I don't know rez. If mic doesn't get better fast, she can hold you liable for medical malpractice.

    :)

I'll pick up some Mucinex. Thanks for the tip, guys.

I actually don't have any phlegm--I'm not stuffed up at all. I just have this irritating itch at the bottom of my throat, and it won't go away. This actually happened to me last year, but I'm convinced that it was due to mold in the building where I worked--Everyone I worked with had a persistent cough. When I stopped working there, it went away, so now that it's back again I'm pretty anxious about it.

Cough drops (Halls, Ricola, etc.) haven't done anything for me, unfortunately.

Yeah, I was going to also mention that persistent coughs usually dont go away from cough drops.

Try out the mucinex...may not be as effective if you dont have phlegm, but it should still do a decent job. Good luck.

    Thank you.

Does anyone have any idea what causes this? I'm sure it varies, but you mentioned it's been going around.

It can be a number of things...cant really pinpoint what has been going on this season. But, generally speaking, coughs lasting a much longer period than the cold itself can be due to a number of things...pollutants in the air, smoking habits, a virus that lingers, respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, medications you may be on, etc...

In my case, I feel that I had an issue with bacteria...may have benefited from taking antibiotics, but I generally dont advise the use of antibiotics unless it is absolutely necessary. I'd prefer to cough an extra month or so instead of using antibiotics.

I don't smoke anything, so that's out. Oh well. Here's hoping it doesn't last four months like last time.

So should I get the Maximum Strength, I guess? No reason to half ass it?

    Appreciate the help.
