So, last month our Sprint cell phone bill was unusually high.

Surprised that we had gone over our allotted minutes (this rarely happens), I noticed a bunch of phone calls to various parts of Latin America from my wife’s cell phone.

Now, this is impossible since neither of us have friends or relatives in that part of the world, and many of the calls were made at times she couldn’t possibly have made them.

She called Sprint, they said they’d send it to their Fraud Department and that there’s been a lot of problems with cloning of cell phones lately, etc. Also, they were going to reset the phone or something to prevent future calls.

Sounds good, right? Not so fast.

My wife just spent an hour on the phone with them. They said the Fraud Department determined there was no fraud and that we have to pay for the calls. My wife said she’s not going to pay for calls we didn’t make and they said her/our service will be cut off.

So, we seem to be at an impasse, and I’m wondering if anyone here has ever been in a similar situation and worked their way out of it. Thanks.

(And no – my wife’s not having an affair with someone in Latin America!) :p

    lol.

i guess you can always suggest to talk to someone higher on the totum poll and you can always threaten to not use them anymore...probably not worth a lawsuit unless you wife is really stressed and its caused a serious strain on your relationship that you are now seeing a therapist about ;)

when i have problems and i am dealing with someone that obviously isnt that into helping me, i just hang up and try again. But i've actually had decent customer service...minus the waiting for an hour and getting passed around like a bong

I just went through this w/ Verizon a few weeks ago. I got billed for a bunch of mystery text messages to a 0000000000 phone number. After 3 weeks of back and forth someone said they were legit and I had to pay. Clearly that was the final word. That same day I email them for a record of all the people I talked to in Verizon. I didn't mention why, I simply asked for the names and contact info. A phone rep calls me next morning and asked me what was the problem (she never asked me about the contact info), I explained I was billed for something I didn't do and 2 minutes later she immediately credited my account no questions asked. The lesson? I didn't make any direct threats about taking this dispute to another level, but clearly they knew what I was planning and they immediately resolved it w/ out any questions. Quite contrary to the previous 3 weeks of pulling teeth trying to get an answer on why I was being billed.

One other thing. The same day they gave me the 'final answer' that I had to pay my bill, I also sent a complaint to the Better Business Bureau online. Coincidentally Verizon resolved my problem (less than 24 hrs later) before the BBB was able to follow through and contact them. A few days later I received a call from a higher rep from Verizon. I told her the issue was already settled and that was the end of it.

    Update:

"I just spent another 40 min on the phone with Sprint. They thought it might be a billing issue but determined it not to be. Now they wonder if it's a technical issue so that the phone is somehow dialing on its own, which would explain why I get calls of people asking me if I just called them. I have to bring the phone to the closest Sprint diagnostic center as soon as possible. They said we need to pay our basic monthly phone charges that we typically do and wait for the rest to be resolved."

Forgot to mention that my wife has been getting calls from people asking if she called them.

As annoyed as my wife is having to spend all this time on the phone with Sprint, it does sound like they're at least trying to figure out the solution to the problem and not just take our money.

I think we should just get her a new phone and see if they can switch her #.

Good stuff, though, professorjay -- I'll remember that tactic if it comes to that.

That's what's so bogus about the whole thing. She's of Eastern European descent; I'm half Asian.

I had a thing where the day we fled during Rita I upped my cell phone plan because i assumed houston's phone lines would be messed up for days and I wanted to not go over on minutes. I called the guy and he said he completely understood and upped my minutes. When I wanted to change providers they said I was still under contract because anytime a Tmobile customer changes their plan they renew their contract for a year. I got pissed off and asked to speak to a manager. He said the same thing. I told him that the guy never told me this or read his usual 2 minutes of hell when ever you agree to a new contract. He finally said fine and let me out of the contract. Then when ti came time for me to change providers I found out he never changed it. Tmobile charged me 175 dollars that showed up on my visa bill. I got the CC company involved. They pulled the money out from Tmobile but then I started getting collection notices. After 5 times telling the people the same story I finally got a letter form Tmobile saying my balance is 0. This took 2 months. I am just glad I won.

99% of the time, the calls are legit. "Legit" includes the calls being made from that specific phone, regardless of the circumstances. (lost, stolen, used w/out permission, ect ...)

The vast majority of the remaining 1% are going to be technical support issues, followed up with billing issues, and last and rarely, cloning issues. This is with any CDMA network.
