You cannot counter racism or anti-Semitism with logic and reason, obviously, because these things are not rooted in logic and reason. Even a good cognitive-behavioral therapist, a generous mental health insurance plan and a few rounds with a Lousiville Slugger will not typically do the trick – these trolls get fuel from fear, transference, guilt, ignorance and other dark elements of human nature. They couch it in ‘debate,’ but we know what it is, even if they don’t (they probably don’t, actually). I mean, CC.net is a basketball website, for crying out loud, but every community – even geeky internet ones – have their trolls. Some appear to be pretty malignant in here.

I would not propose to ban these folks, though, unless it is way extreme stuff like “you should all die” or whatever. Bad opinions are still only opinions (threats and deathwishes are another). And even when squelching crap opinions may feel like the right thing to do in a place like this, I think it is not when they stay within the loose guidelines of civil debate. As much as I enjoy reading Bkagy’s ******** posts – really enjoy it, actually – I do not support banning them. Free debate has its price, and its price can be stomach churning, anti-Semitic, racist homophobic garbage based in lies and human sewage. But even though the reality of having them included – up to the point of ‘you need to die’ – is an essential part of authentic debate, even though it is terribly offensive to reasonable folks.

And I sure don’t think we / Clutch oughta shut down the BBS Hangout. I never came here before Sept. 11, but I think this has life in it (the MC Mark thing, for instance, was extremely touching and human, and it would not have flown anywhere else). And I would be sorry to see people leave because of the unnamed losers who spray the BBS Hangout with garbage.

Instead of shutting it down, banning them, I propose this: let their freaking threads drop like stones. I have the suspicion that the Brian Kagys of the world have way more intellectual merit and real-life power in this world than the trolls. The best the trolls can do – on an internet site, anyway – is engage people in the debate and make them use superior resources to go through their troll sewage. We could probably devote our energies to something better, and keeping their threads up top gives them power. That includes little jokes and barbs, too (note to self).

So, rather than straight-up ignoring them, I say someone like Jeff or Kagy or Clutch of whoever author a thread with some quality explanation of the majority-opinion on racist-tinged threads, maybe with some nice quote or John Lennon lyric – I don’t know, maybe something harsher, I am not the man for this job. But whenever some a-hole posts some despicable thread, one of us posts one link to the aforementioned thread underneath the racist thread, explaining to new people the principle that letting the idea drop to the netherworld of poor threads is a matter of disgust, not apathy. And the rest of us let it drop. Resist the temptation to debate the undebatable.

I think letting those threads sink organically will be the surest way to kill them (who in here has not felt the ache of a thread which goes nowhere – possibly hereby nicknamed ‘a fromobile’? just a thought, no offense baby brother…). If we close the hangout, we sacrifice our curiously addictive geek activiuty. If we ban everyone we disagree with, we become intolerant and add fuel to the fire (in my opinion). If we engage with them, we will ALWAYS lose. I say, let ‘em crash to the bottom of the thread pile tagged with a link to an as-yet unwritten treatise. Thoughts?

I like the idea of being able to manually "squelch" certain users. I am a huge Rockets fan and I also love to come to the hangout either to read or to start fun threads. However, threads by Q8 and rompa make me sick and I would rather not read them. If there was an option for me to ignore their posts I would use it. The best way to hurt a troll is to ignore him.

There is a way to ignore posts.

Go to "user control panel", then to "edit ignore list", and then add whatever names you want to the list and click update list.

CBFC, you are truly a man of reason. I love this idea. Personally, I stopped reading the mentioned threads long ago, but I am tired of people b****ing about it right and left everywhere. I fully support this method of removing the troll element from the BBS.

What's so difficult about it? Just ignore them. Trolls tend to shrivel and die if no one challenges their twisted opinions....

Doesn't seem like it to me. That thread by rompa already had about 30 replies before I even looked at it then I read about 5 posts, said this is stupid why am I even reading this pointless debate, and went back to the rest of the Hangout. And while I didn't completely ignore it, I still didn't post in it and I'm pretty sure others could do the same.

Oh and did I miss something. When did all this talk about shutting the Hangout down start. I fell asleep at like 11 yesterday, did something happen after that? Or before and I just missed it.

i challenge everybody to proof that i'm a racist guy or antisemitic ..etc . i expressed several times that i don't hate jews because they are jews , no baby if you did not read my posts no need for this conclusions . there are jews in U.S that do not support israel but they always bash this racist state . are you going to call them (( antisemitic )) ?? (( racist )) ??

i haven't any problems with jews or christians as well . one of my friends is at the university from eastren europe and it is a good proof about my wills with the others who don't belong to my race .

if you don't believe me , check this site :

    www.nimn.org

so you have to contrast between people who hate jews just because they are jews and those who refuse a jewish state in palestine .

I think free speech is vital, and is the spring from which change and intelligence is sprung. If certain individuals aren't able to see the absurdity of some of their statements, then we are here to point them out to them.

In addition to the anti-semitism in this board, there is also a considerable amount of anti-arab sentiment that permeates through the BBS. Though I am not Arab, I would be upset with much of the negative rancor placed upon them in the last two months.

I think we should judge each of these as equal wrongs.
There was Arab/Muslim bashing going on for weeks, and there was very little talk of shutting down the BBS, but when the talk becomes anti-Jew/Israel, it takes a much more serious note.

My comments are factual in nature, and I am extremely far from a racist. As I stated in my thread, wrong is wrong, irregardless of who commits it.

But a public forum allows individuals to see other opinions that they have never seen before, as shocking as they may be at times. Some people have grown up under a cloud of certain idealogy and thoughts and its inconcievable that people should think otherwise, then they criticize others for the same thing.

I think of how ignorant the children who chant for Osama Bin Laden are, how they do not even truly understand their religion or the life that exists outside of their oppressive regimes.

For that reason we must reach out to anyone's ideas and try to understand why/and what situation compelled them to think that way. If a child has been brought up his whole life thinking that America is evil, how is that different than in the US, children are subjected to media/movies that subject arabs as terrorists.

What I mean is that you will never get everyone to not post in "bad" threads. I rarely post in troll threads, I realized the futility of arguing with them long ago. But equally futile is the "ignore it and it will go away" approach.

Nice sentiment, but it wont happen. You post something inflammatory and the thread will blow up, whether a few well intentioned people ignore it or not.

I've avoided the Jew-slandering threads for the same reason and purpose that CBFC has stated. Responding to these trolls is like shoveling coal into a furnace. It just feeds them and gets them (and others) worked up. Let the threads die. One person can respond eloquently in an "in-your-face" style, and that's it. Shut 'em down and move on. The other innocuous "Poll: What's your favorite type of apple?" threads will bury the hate messages so deep, only a search engine will be able to find them. Eventually, these trolls, desperate for attention, will do something blatantly stupid and get them banned. C'est la vie.

No more of this "Strike-me-down-with-all-of-your-hatred" bulls***, okay?

    Thanks BGM

Rompa and Q8 Rocket are ignored.. Don't consider me a coward, I am just a Rocket fan who enjoys the hangout. I am a conservative Jew(not conservative politically) and I prefer not to hear any lies spread about my own people. I trust others to be able to seperate truths from lies and the BBS Hangout should not be shut down. Please Clutch, where else can we talk about video games(especially DaDakota) and every day events? Keep the hangout alive or these bigots/imbeciles will have served their purpose.

Yeah, I know. People aren't going to sit still when their religion, heritage, ethnic background, ...etc is being slandered. Not that I blame them either, you have to stand up for what you believe in. Just not always sure this is the place to make that stand....

you may be blind now and can't see this post , and that doesn't make any sense .

no body told you " don't enjoy the hangout " , you can keep posting on whatever you want . if you don't want to disscuse middle east issues just stay away , lies ?? lol what type of lies ?? israel (( the racist state )) masscres and horrible crimes are lies ??!!

you have to understand something farnchise . my posts here have a definsive nature againts what american people always think of muslims in general because of what the jewish media telling them about us .

i discoverd that nobody knows about (( for example )) kuwait and its democracy , israel crimes and masscres from 1948 to this date , and that's exactly what some jews look for to make people sympthaize with them and hate the muslims to a level that can't contrast between a student and a terorrist just like what happened to my friend (( he's in wisconsin ))

i wanna let them see something diffrent , something from the other parts from the world . why do some people hate this nation ?

your media told them (( they hate your democracy and freedom )) !!!! most of americans believe in that now !!! they don't think even about any possible things behind 11th september tragedy .

oh what ?? my posts objective is closing BBS hangout .. lol good joke franchise

How can you stand up for yourself when the person spewing crap is hiding behind a computer screen.

how can you stand yourself when an israeli hunting kids in occupied palestine almost every 4 days , destroying houses on thier owners ? bashing muslims and spreading lies about you everywhere their hands reach ? planning to destroy your holy shrines ? how ?

I say we buy Q8 a ticket to Houston and we throw a little get together for him

apparently , you missed your chance to kill me with your appache & dam dam bullets !! i was in houston in 1993 , when i was a kid ! how sad is that ?

ok buy the ticket but this time come with F-16 to houston airport .
